Cost of injector refurbishment

One thing to add - if you proceed to get them serviced then confirm that any parts they replace will be genuine original manufacturer parts, not pattern parts. Dont work on the premise that all suppliers are equal on this matter. I had the face of an injector split once, the owner of my local diesel place (Rochester City Diesels - a very good option if you are this way)) coloured the air blue with his views on pattern parts, which was the cause of the split, and he then moved on to the folly of cheap pattern fuel filters. You would have though he would have been kinder given the enhanced revenue he derives from their use ;-).

I don't entirely agree with the wait until it breaks philosophy, I had the injectors serviced on my Yanmar 4JH4E earlier this year, first time in 12 years, no obvious signs of a problem, but when we put a borescope into the cylinders, there was an obvious carbon mark on the piston head, see the attached photo.

The injector obviously weren't projecting a good spray pattern and needed new projector nozzles. I haven't run the engine since the injectors were overhauled ( the boat is still ashore), but I'm hoping that there will be noticeable difference to the power or fuel consumption. Sometimes preventative maintenance is worthwhile.

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I leave the throttle at normal cruising speed going with the tide - 11 knots through Hurst Narrows is my record in a Snapdragon 24, but give it a good bit more welly going into a harbour against the tide.

As with many things, one can often find faults if one goes looking for them. Unfortunately, if you go looking for them, you'll often find faults to spend money on that would have never given a problem in the lifetime of the engine, nor would they have shortened that lifetime. If you're racing that engine, by all means fix every tiny little thing - you probably put new injectors in every race, but cruising - even offshore cruising? Life's too short (as is the bank balance)
