  • To a somewhat relevant extent

  • Not one iota

This statement posted in this thread made me curious to check the forum views on this topic.
So, thanks in advance for your honest clicks!
I struggled slightly to align my thoughts on the comment that you quoted with the choices in the poll inasmuch as UK boatbuilding plc may well have a thinner order book that 12 months ago, and the UK government of today may well be more redistributionist than its predecessor. But, imho, one proposition is only marginally linked to the other.

Well the Tories did give nearly a billion quid to party donors via Covid contracts and Tory peer Michelle Mone did have a 130 foot yacht, so there could well be some kind of link here.

Since most UK boat builders export the vast majority of their output (Princess Yachts - 95%), who's in Downing St. will likely have the square root of damn all effect.

Donald "I love tariffs" Trump in the White House may have a far greater influence.

Well, the comment I quoted plainly suggested that the current order book is thinner than it would have been with a different election result, didn't it?
Which is something I struggled to understand - hence the poll, whose result so far seem to confirm that I'm not alone in failing to see the correlation.

I will avoid getting drawn into current affairs (particularly Uk ones by people who I don’t think even live here), but the various posts on here previously seem to suggest more boat building specific drivers - eg that most UK (big mobo) boatbuilders are somewhat inefficient in their production methods and struggle to make a profit on boats they build. Plus there have been sanctions and restrictions on some of the overseas buyers of larger boats. So probably more company internal and global factors than UK specific.
For bigger boats tax (VAT) avoidance is probably a routine thing, but for UK builders of smaller boats, events 8 years ago were probably more relevant.

One assumes the mods have a hangover so are a bit slow today  :giggle:
Yes, unusually slow.

They didn't waste any rime banning me the other day after a post criticising he of the peculiar orange hue who must not be spoken of unkindly.

The ban was imposed at 23:30 so some zealot must have been working late. ;)

Absolutely agree. My issue with the poll was whether to choose “somewhat relevant” or “not one iota”. I would have like an in-between option; maybe “very slightly/hardly at all”. :)

Or a 'Don't know'.
I can see the point of the 4th option BJB suggested (*), which just didn't pop to my mind, otherwise I would have included it.
But I did consider including an IDK alternative, and ruled it out based on the Dunning-Kruger effect that Clash mentioned in the original thread.
I mean, let's be honest: none of us would be posting in a boating forum if we weren't sure to know it all, would we?

(*) the one in post #14 of course, not the surrealistically entertaining one in post #16! :ROFLMAO:
