Help! I'm the proud owner of a coppercoated boat that was coated in 2007.

Thing is, she was launched for this year early April and already has a 2" beard of green stuff around her waterline. She lives beside a pontoon in the upper reaches of Portsmouth Harbour where the water occasionally becomes a little brackish.

Everyone raves about coppercoat! Why has this fouling started so soon? How can I tell if my coppercoat has 'worn out'? I gave it a very light scrubbing with a wet scrubbing pad before launch and I'd assumed she'd be fine until at least half way through the season.

Any suggestions please, anyone?

Same here. All I am doing is scrubbing with a brush each week. Will get the boat dived on before going on a long trip

CC does not like brakish water, it needs salt water free of phophates washed off the fields. Our CC went on 9 years ago and is still fine so it isnt worn off. You say you abraded the CC before lauch, has it gone a copper green colour yet? It wont work until it does, that said weed will still grow in brackish water.

+1 with galadriel.
Coppercoat doesn't "wear out" except possibly very long-term. But if it's not activated (by becoming dull green as galadriel describes) it won't be effective. In this case, the beard line can be abraded in the water with a Scotchbrite pad to reveal more fresh copper, although there may not be much point doing this until the boat is about to leave the area where the chemistry seems not to work. Unlike conventional antifouls, CC can be scrubbed vigorously without significantly reducing its thickness.
