This is a very tricky situation as any contact between water and contact lenses could cause a serious, sight-threatening infection. So, it would be best to avoid exposure where possible. However, as a Contact Lens Optician with a high prescription myself, I also understand wearing glasses while sailing could be inconvenient.

If you do opt for contact lenses, then make sure they are daily disposables. This will reduce the risk of infection because you remove potential contaminants or irritants along with the lenses at the end of each wear. Be meticulous with your hand hygiene when handling the lenses. They always have to be thoroughly cleaned and thoroughly dried before handling contact lenses, so on a boat you might have to be extra vigilant.

Also, you could wear tight-fitting wrap-around sunglasses which should block out splashes from the water. Unfortunately, following all these tips does not leave you totally risk-free from contracting an infection.

I’m surprised about this as the very reason I started wearing (hard, and then rigid gas permeable) contact lenses was to sail and do other water sports in the sea. I wore them for just over 30 years until getting LASEK and experienced no eye infections, even though much of my sailing was dinghy racing within 2 miles of a ‘water treatment’ plant. There are plenty of risks in life (including skydiving, sailing, motorcycling, etc) so I guess that most can manage this risk accordingly.
