Share a secret with me and I'll share it with the world.

You deserve extra points for not doing it on your own boat.

One of the main reason for not doing it on Fairwinds was that she doesn't handle well in marinas . . .

~ offset prop so no propwash

~ variable pitch prop w. no gearbox means low thrust at low speeds with no neutral - prop is always spinning

~ prop walk always in one direction forward or back (prop only turns in one direction, reverse is reverse pitch)

~ long keel

And anyway I felt I needed some concentrated revision . . . sailing on your own for a few years breeds bad habits. In fact I had some difficulty relearning how to drive a normal boat under power - did five days YM prep beforehand with an excellent though eccentric instructor. The boat was a Sadler 34, which I'd always wanted to try anyway.

Also, I did it on the Clyde, an area I haven't sailed in much for several years. I think it is better for your navigaton if you do it in (relatively) unfamiliar waters. There's a tendency to be a bit slapdash if you know exactly where you are going anyway.

I can't say I performed brilliantly, but the examiner described it as a 'competent pass' and I'm happy with that. It's a starting point - enough encouragement to really try to improve my sailing.

thanks /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

sounds like a good time, and with result that you want to keep learning, great.

I still learn ever day about some aspect of boating that I did not know, Its what keeps it fun. now go and enjoy it, and know that if you get it wrong, it had to be a mistake only a YM could make /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jimi has one - now Webby - must be giving them away with Cornflake packet tops nowadays. Not like that in my day harummpphh.
Anyway - surely anyone who can sail around Ireland deserves one just for the achievement!

Because of all that Guinness and still managing to find your way back? Should it also apply if the applicant didn't mean to circumnavigate Ireland?

Absolutely! I was sworn to secrecy, having met Nick for a pint the day before he started the course, but it was clear to me that the actual exam would be a mere formality for one of Nick's experience!
