Can anyone help with an IT problem.
I bought one of those compact flash card GPS for use with a handheld and laptop. It works fine on the iPaq and on my laptop running WXP.
Then I got a cheapo laptop to take on the boat, running W98. For some reason it can't see the GPS, but does detect there is something in the PCMCIA socket.
The LED on the device comes on weakly. In the XP laptop I get a good strong light. When I scan ports in GPS info I get "No GPS receiver" against Com1. All other Coms are blank.
Any idea where to go next?

sounds normal ie XP will find and use devices like cards/cards readers etc that W98 requires specific drivers loaded and installed for.
re led - the hardware may find a power source but the software will need to be configured to use it. May even get problems if you remove/insert media on a hot basis with 98.

They answer the most egghead questions on there - I am grateful silent recipient of much wisdom!!!

Why not copy the XP onto the older lappy?

<hr width=100% size=1>this post is a personal opinion, and you should not base your actions on it.

It's perfectly OK to use an unlicensed copy of WIndows outside territorial waters, isn't it?

As long as you aren't using both at once or have given one away, you are not breaking any copyright law by doing so. Of course, MS won't be breaking their necks to tell you that.

Possibly, but you will probably be breaking your license agreement with Microsoft (some licences allow the primary user to make a copy on a laptop, but I think this is limited to XP professional bought from MS, not OEM copies), which is completely separate to copyright.

It's largely irrelevant though, as you can't simply copy XP from one computer to another, as it needs to actually be installed to load all the correct drivers for that machine. In doing an installation, the software is copy protected, to prevent it being loaded on to multiple computers (though there are wrinkles to this)

I've done it, admittedly with Office rather than XP, and when you phone MS to register they are very unhelpful and grumpy about it... but they give you the code. I wonder if their 'agreement' being seperate and different to copyright is one of the things that keeps leading them into conflict with American anti-trust laws. After all, if I sell you a book or a hammer, it's a bit rich to specify where and how you use it.

That's what I meant by wrinkles :)

You can also ask them to remove 'old' computer, and give you code for new computer as well, but you run into online update issues on the 'old' computer then.

Strictly speaking, unless the EULA specifically give you permission to load the OS onto a laptop as well as a maincomputer, then you are breaching terms of licence, and that is illegal in most countries. It's normal practice in the IT world for licences to restrict use to a named computer, and there are no anti-trust issues around this practice.

As the thread has got somewhat sidetracked, to get it back on track. The card obviously works, so the issue has to be with the laptop.

Have you tried any other cards in the slot to see if they are recognized and work? The led could be a power/data connection problem, or could simply be that the device is not active - difficult to know without more info. Go to Control Panel, then System, and Hardware then Device manager, then click on the + signs to open then up. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or similar against anything?

While you are doing this, do you have the make and model of the card, and then I can check 98 compatibility and if you need any specific drivers

You need to load win 98 drivers in to the laptop to let it see the compact card GPS. It will not be com port 1 but likley to see it as com port 4 or 5.
Search the web for drivers to suit.
XP will load its own drives which is why it works on the XP machine.
