Hi to you all....

I am new here and although have had years of motor boat experience, including living on a narrow boat for four years i am currently landlocked......lol........and have found a stunning Colvic for sale. Not being a sailor and not wanting to get to technical at this point, i am looking at buying it for River cruises under power, she has 20hp in board so plenty of power and my question is this. How difficult / expensive is it to have the main mast rigged so that i can lower it for tight bridges, or is it better to pay for the cranage to have it taken out and layed down whilst cursing..........

Any help would be really appreciated.....

thanks paul

you will do lots of cursing anyway, it's the nature of the game sometimes :)

I thought that the small Colvics had a tabernacle anyway. If that's the case, then rig an A frame and some ropes, and it should be easy.

EDIT.

Looks like a mast step, so what you need is ato have a tabernacle made up, pin the mast, a couple of long pieces of 2x2 timber for a gantry/A frame, and away you go. Properly set up it should take 2 people half an hour to lower mast.

The mast on a Springtide is on the limit for regular dropping and will need the suggested modifications to make it a DIY job for minimum of 2 people.

Although they have a lot to commend them as a solid coastal cruiser the bilge keels can be limiting in rivers as it can make it difficult to get close to banks. Although 20hp is quite generous for a sail boat auxiliary, it is a sailing boat, not a motor boat.
