All part of the learning process...Enter a new 'port' at low tide if at all possible to see what lurks below the surface

[/ QUOTE ] Or check your charts then follow the Nav marks in - Not sure quite how you'd get into the likes of Bembridge at low tide ...

Navigational aids comes to a very small part of it.The rest seems to be spent on officialdom & fancy runabouts etc.

[/ QUOTE ] Maintaining harbours is more than chucking a few posts/buoys out and sitting back to enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Chi Harbour had income of £1.4m during the 2007/8 accounting period (See Here which IMHO is not a huge amount for the size of harbour...

I was referring to the sort of horrors that can be found generally outside the main channels & are not usually marked on charts in my experience.
I agree that Harbour Authority's are necessary in controlling water skiers & miscreants generally.I guess I just resent paying for other peoples wrong doing.

[/ QUOTE ] Whilst there are patrol boats out and about in the harbour, the do not seem to spend all their time wizzing up and down stopping miscreants ...
They do assist those that get themselves into trouble, they collect dues from visiting boats (although I believe only generally if anchored in the popular anchorages) ...
If you don't want to pay towards the general upkeep of the harbour then don't come in ... QED!

Having seen what other harbours charge I think Chi Harbour is extremely reasonable for visitors/residents ... and if you're a frequent visitor there is nothing stopping you from buying a plaque for the year with the "savings" it gives...

Not sure what QED! means but there are other locations that don't charge a penny & I may well visit Chichester if it means that I can avoid the masses & characterless sterilization generally.I hope all the residents ar'nt as snooty as you /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you find Chi too snooty, there's always langstone harbour. Pub full of jetskiers on E side of entrance.
Nice pubs right at the top, Langstone Village.
Don't know if Eastney Cruising Assoc has visitors moorings at the moment?
Not much other access to the shore!

just look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q.E.D.

[/ QUOTE ] suprised you feel I come across as snooty ... far from it, but you moaned about the harbour charges - I just pointed out what you'd be paying towards - like the rest of us do.
