For anyone not familar with the solent your question would seem sensible. For those that have gone the short length of just 1 solent river "the Hamble" they will understand how good most solent sailors are to avoid collisions and why they are keen to ensure they correctly obey the ColRegs. etc etc

Sailfree, considering we used to fall out on a regular basis on this forum /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif, I now find that I more and more agree with you views. As for Teamspirit ( am I being drawn into a mini troll here?) to suggest that the entrance to Chi harbour is a free for all (I think thats what he called it) I cant believe it, you have to pay attention, yes, but dont make it out to be so bad.

Again in the fear of falling for a mini troll, the Solent aint all bad, yes there are a lot of boats around, but I reckon we are better sailors, just because we are exposed to more col regs situations in one weekend than many are exposed to in a whole season.

But if you do sail in the Solent or intend to, learn the col regs, sail by them, respect them, and then there is a better chance that you will gain the respect of others.

Mind explaining what is happening here? I see the pedestrians but it looks that, whilst the boat is aground, it is still the right way up, so perhaps that was all intended.

Pilsey Island looking west, tide has gone/going out, the mud is still wet and is reflecting the sunlight.

The two dinghies are stuck in the mud and the yacht is floating. The people in the shot had been having a BBQ on the north end of the island and were returning to their dinghies.

While there were loads of boats off east head, at the bottom of the Thorney channel there were 6 inc us I think.

I does look like matie has anchored too close to a wier /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well I have been reading the latest "Colregs Discussion", the one about the yacht on tow, and I was having a bit of a ponder, (like well you might), about why all these Colregs threads seem to eminate from the Solent Saily Folk???

I might be a tad off plot here, but I can't recall a thread on colregs eminating from any other sailing area, that is not to say that it hasn't happened, just that I don't remember one.

So what is going on here?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well chrusty old bean I sail regularly in the Solent & avoid reading collision regulations about yachts under tow & all the endless speculation....(I have an ancient nautical almanac onboard to deal with unforeseen incidents).
I find you can clutter your head with to much nautical jargon & spoil the point of it all.......special yachtmaster courses.Vhf licenses.Strictly for the birds /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

[ QUOTE ]
PS;Does anybody know if you can sneak in Chichester Harbour for free & get away with it?

[/ QUOTE ]
Strictly, I think you are required to pay harbour dues even if you just pop in to the harbour and drop the anchor at East Head for lunch.

Has anyone who has done that ever been asked to cough up? I haven't.

[ QUOTE ]
Get away without paying £3.50??

Well if you really want to, you could go there after 6 ish, but that's no guarantee they won't still catch up with you.

[/ QUOTE ]

£3.50 dos'nt sound to bad but I still resent paying anything when I hav'nt used any resources. Thanks for the info.Does somebody come round or do you have to clock in so to speak?

What!!

You mean that if I took all my cruising equipment off my boat it would float that high in the water!!
/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Must try that some day.

So you didn't use West Pole, or any of the channel markers? ok then ....

I hav'nt been there yet though I did buy my last two boats from there & sailed them out.I can't remember being too obsessed with channel marker buoys......but then when you only draw about two feet things like that don't obsess you /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

[/ QUOTE ] On most weekends you can see quite a number of boats who were obviously not too obsessed with the channel markers - nicely aground on an obscure sandbank .....

All part of the learning process.......Lesson number one.Enter a new 'port' at low tide if at all possible to see what lurks below the surface.(with a tide rising you should be able to float off alright). Not trying to say that I am perfect but when you add up all the money from visiting yachts.Navigational aids comes to a very small part of it.The rest seems to be spent on officialdom & fancy runabouts etc.

Out of the dozens of times we've been into Chi, we've probably paid only 2 or 3 times. If you anchor with everyone else you are likely to get caught, if you shun the crowds you likely won't.

[/ QUOTE ] Or check your charts then follow the Nav marks in - Not sure quite how you'd get into the likes of Bembridge at low tide ...

[/ QUOTE ] Maintaining harbours is more than chucking a few posts/buoys out and sitting back to enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Chi Harbour had income of £1.4m during the 2007/8 accounting period (See Here which IMHO is not a huge amount for the size of harbour...

A terror vessel!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I'm getting worried. I never thought of Chichester Harbour Conservancy as members of Al Qaeda.

Costs a fortune for my boat to stay at home, so £3.50 to take it somewhere nice is a bargain.
Main thing the conservancy do is keep the place habitable by policing jetskis, ribs etc, worth 3.50 for that imho.

I would take care entering chi at LWS it's kinda shallow in places, and can be lumpy if the tide is still going out. Sometimes hard to spot all the buoys due to boats etc, easy to accidentally cut the corner, I've done it! I now tend to count the buoys and identify each one.
