got my coding survey on wednesday.

I'm nearly there, just a few jobs to do tomorrow - only one bugs me. I have to make the water intake hoses fireproof. I was hoping to buy a fireproof cloth tube to slide over the hoses. Can I buy this if so where. If not how do I go about fireproofing the hoses?

On my first coded boat they wrapped (helically) a 1inch aluminium self adhesive tape around the pipes. Sorry i don't know the brand name, but I wd have thought if you google aluminium tape or something you'll get a result. On the next (my current) boat we just swapped the hoses for fireproof grade rubber - it was easier. On next boat it will be done at build, using fireproof grade rubber, as part of the spec

It probably is but the engineering is questionable and I wouldn't do it on a production small GRP boat. As the boat pounds on waves the hull flexes; that causes cracks where the metal pipe attaches to the seacock unless the pipe is very flexibly mounted. The possibility of getting this wrong is high and rubber pipe is much better

Also, the pipes we're talking about here are usually the aircon and genset raw water intakes*, and these are mostly below waterline and sometimes fully below waterline, so the metal pipe would be needed for virtually the full length. Aircon systems run very high hours (more than gensets and engines) so tend to use centrifugal pumps (no rubber impeller to wear out) which must be below the water line to prime and hence all-metal pipe can never work on a production boat

*Normally, even on production boats, the engine raw water intake pipes are fireproof anyway
 
you can get turbo wrap off of ebay..
about 15-20 quid a roll..
doon my turbo's and exhaust in it.some might call exhaust bandage..
they use it on rally cars to help the turbo performance!!

On my, coded when I bought her, boat, it was just thickish figlass tabe wrapped helically around all the relevant pipes. It was piggin horrible stuff, stopped us getting at sea cocks etc, I soon unwound it and slung it!

Thanks for all the replies!

In the end I found a slide on fire proof lagging. Ideal I thought but it was £50/metre.

New fireproof hose was £25/metre and so cost me £60 and about 2 hours of my time, so that was that. I had changed the fuel hose last year when I put the fuel flow metres in so that was all fine.

The most expensive part of the coding was a new forehatch. My immaculate bomar was old enough to not be able to fit the exterior handle conversion kit. I changed it so it hinges at the front at the same time. (if you want a new hatch pm me!)

The survey was yesterday and I've a small list of minor items to update (eg not enough chain on the kedge) , but I think all will be well soon.
