It's the wife that really needs all the stuff I mentioned in the op, not the kids!!!

In that case at some point treat her to Portavadie .... as marina's go it's very nice, girly pampering, over priced knick nack shop and not cheap but good meal ....there's even hair straighteners in the GENTS .... seriously :)

Are the hair straighteners back? I thought it was bad news when they were taken out a couple of winters ago, bad marketing? taking away their claim to fame.
What else had Portavadie going for it except a couple of pleasant anchorages close by.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Drimsynie Estate at the top of Loch Goil. Turn left after Faslane. It's a lovely sail up there, sheltered and there are moorings available for a small fee i.e. £10. There is a purpose built landing jetty for your dingy which can be used for dropping off people. The estate has log cabins, golf, swimming pool, kayaking etc..etc... Probably best to do an internet search and you will see it has loads to offer.

Also not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but you need to download the Welcome Anchorages publication which almost an essential document for cruising Scotland and Ireland.

Another thing - Holy Loch marina are doing a deal which is the normal price for the first night with the second night half price. Included electricity.

Enjoy.

Portavadie are currently building a new leisure complex which should be opening this summer, two pools one of which will be an outdoor infinity pool. I'm moving the boat up to there in June for a season.
