Between boats, so decided to try a new cruising area. Just back from an amazing fortnight on the Clyde, and wanted to thank those who encouraged us to try it. A very refreshing contrast to the Solent.

Stunning scenery
Peaceful anchorages
Very friendly people
Lots of places to visit with relatively short hops between

Really detailed VHF weather forecasts were interesting, but completely wrong most days.

The West Coast of Scotland has some of the best cruising grounds in Europe. Next time try a bit higher up, it gets better.

Imagine we’ve left Craigendoran behind
And wind-happy yachts by Kilcreggan we find
At Kirn and Dunoon and Innellan we stay
Then Scotland’s Madeira that’s Rothesay, they say
Or maybe by Fairlie and Largs we will go
Or over to Millport that thrills people so
Mavbe joumey to Arran it can't be denied
Those scenes all belong to the song of the Clyde

When sun sets on dockland, there’s beauty to see
The cry of a seabird is music to me
The blast of a horn loudly echoes, and then
A stillness descends on the water again
Tis’ here that the sea-going liners are born
But, unlike the salmon, they seldom return
Can you wonder the Scots o’er the ocean so wide
Should constantly long for the song of the Clyde
(Chorus omitted .....)

Re: Chorus:

Let the winds blow high, let the winds blow low
Through the streets in ma kilt I go.
All the lassies shout "Hello,
hey Donald, whaur's yer troosers?"

The name of it thrills me and fills me with pride
And I'm satisfied whate'er may betide
The sweetest of songs is the song of the Clyde

Re: Chorus:

Okay, I didn't get it quite right. But I remember as a child going down to Wemyss Bay to collect mussels and whelks.
Watching ocean going ships pass so close it felt like one could reach out and touch them.
Herring in a feeding frenzy.
Breezes so sweet off the firth one could almost parasail using your raincoat.
Ocean liners my father had worked on being launched from the shipyards.

God, I'm getting old!

...and lots of sheltered water when the weather's grotty, not just one island for the boating masses to hide behind, all trying to avoid lobster pots and each other.

The shelter from the Scottish islands continues nearly all the way to the top, with the exception of 'ard 'n' murky point.

Re: Far have i travelled....

..and much have i seen
Dark brooding drunkards
and cauliflowers green

flickering burgees
and wallets sealed tight
hunched swaying figures
in the late watch of night

nights wen we sang like our pants were on fire
of the life and the times Tart of Glantire

Tart of Glantire
with knickers that smell of the sea
my desire is always free them
oh tart of glantire

Sweep through heather
Drink beer in the glen
Carry me home
Cos i'm pissed again

the crap in the holding tank's higher and higher
as we sing for my love of the Tart of Glantire

Re: Far have i travelled....

Love it
I have a strong feeling we should meet teamhanded at the LBS and commandeer the stage and entertain the crowds for a wee while. I think it might be a pleasant alternative to all those silly tarts of both sexes that they have jigging around in strange clothing.
We could organise a load of Burgees and some corporate YBW poloshirts and then just give it rice.

Re: but but

we did that last year, but SOME people didn't turn up!

Anyway, we need a new repertoire for the new venue. Are pipe bands fashionable again now? Or are African bands still more PC with unfathomable shouting and nobody allowed to say what a load of rubbish? At least the massed pipe bands kept it short.

Re: but but

I think it needs to be topical and of now
in light of jimi's problems i fancy learning the pan pipes and doing moody versions of the 'sound of silence' and 'Help'
