Help...... due to a fault with the exhaust on my diesel lump my engine bay is now black with soot, which is resitant to all sorts of normal cleaning stuff, has anyone any experience of cleaning up this kind of mess ?

It literally is everywhere, inside the battery charger, over the inflatable toys, in all the storage boxes, and covering the engine.

Chemicals to use, companys to call ETC ETc ... all answers gratefully received, well the sensible ones anyway !

Well being in the business your in. I'd nab a litre or two of Truck Clean/Traffic Film remover. Dilute it down, spray it on and wash it off. If you can't get any I've got a spare 25 ltrs knocking about and get to Poole fairly often.

Thought about that, taking a couple of barrels of parts washer down, spraying it over everything and letting it go into the bilge, but that stuffs going to make a hell of a mess in the marina when it pumps its self out , dont feel comfortable doing it

must be some other way ?

must be another way ?

NO, a steamer is different. I have a Polti steamer, looks like a vax, it is brilliant, it gives out a steady jet of steam and after cleaning the steam evaporates.

Mate you might just have to do that, it sticks to everything it comes in contact with, so far everything Ive put on it wont clean it properly, water runs off it and turns it to goo, detergent wont touch it , jiff is the best so far but you can imagine how long that would take !

just as well I can see the funny side, there is a funny side isn't there, please tell mr theres's a funny side !

Apparently its normal, to repair it on the thursday and for it to still be faulty on the friday, it's also common practice to let the owner pick up the marina bill (so far 10 days) and also the cleaning bill.

unless you know different

What you need is Mucky Farters patented boat remover. 25 quid including post packing for a gallon. TMC cleaned the whole meditaranian off two gallons. LJS got a more consise boat off only a few squerts. Both now requirwe more. Mucky Farters Boat remover will remove anything you want. Just be carefull and not remove the usefull thingies!!

Don't use anything water based. Soot is hydrophobic (repels water) and essentially oil based and as you've discovered it turns into a nasty goo with water. Water based included all the normal detergents you'd use around the house.

If you can let it all dry off again, try a professional soot sponge (think of using a big rubber to remove pencil from paper). You'll need a few for the area you need to clean. eg http://www.conservation-by-design.co.uk/sundries/sundries13.html

You could try something like Gunk, but that's going to cause a real mess in the bilge. Could you pump it into a bucket or something.

Something more environmentally friendly is washing soda. This is water based, but uses a paste to draw the soot out. Make a thick paste with water, and layer it on. Keep it moist with a water spray for several hours. Then wash off with water. Only use this on GRP, def not on aluminium.

One other tip is that if there is any fine powdery particulate soot, rather than just a greasy layer, use a powerful vacuum cleaner to take the worst off. Don't use a brush type head, you'll just smear it. Hold the vacuum head just clear of the surface, and suck the powder off.

Been down this road big time. Hoover to get the dry dusty stuff off. Ust "Blitz it" or "Formular 1" to clean and wash off. Switch off bilge pump and suck out the mess with an aquavac and dispose of in the marina in the oil / water drum. Be prepaired to do this for some time it keeps leaching out of the nooks and cranies.

eh?

Sulphuric acid, surely?. Sodium hydroxide is NaOH.

A mate used to make/sell car-cleaning chemicals & the truckwash(worked very well for cleaning MX bikes) was NaOH + thickener & smell. His wash&wash that the trade lapped up was just detergent + strawberry smell (no wax).
