Classic Day Boats

Caution - old thread.

I just bought a Squib. It happened to be for sale, there happened to be a mooring available and I already had a tender in the tender park, so the planets were all aligned. It’s a really lovely boat to sail, and the offspring are working out how to camp aboard.

How about join a club that has a few boats that you can hire?

Royal Southampton has loads of dinghy's you can take out over a Gins. Royal Southern has J70's and I think other boats for day hire. I think I saw something over at Island not too long ago.

Or how about a boat share? Even just an informal pay a bit towards maintenance or do the work, in return for use, instead of buying a share.

I am sure there are loads of people who would trade a few weekends for some manpower and perhaps a little cash.

Or how about a little trainer sailor? There is a nice jag 21 for £1400 here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/jaguar-2...666109?hash=item3b1161657d:g:zfkAAOSwvjBbJpYM

That said, there seem to be plenty on ebay for not a lot. No marina or mooring fees. Although, as I have just found out with a little digging, there are some fairly cheap bouys around under 8m, even on the Hamble.

Or this must be the lowest boat share on the Solent at only £150 / month for 35 days sailing a 25 footer from Itchen Marine http://www.solentboatshare.co.uk/priceplan.html

More expensive, but nothing like the big players, and you get the boat to yourself: http://www.gosail.club/bareboat-charter-prices

Last idea for today, build your own. Lots of kits and self-help groups - you could have something to do in the winter and a boat to sail by summer:

Hope that helps!

They are quite rare. Funnily enough I shared the club slip with one yesterday. That one is immaculate, and I do mean really spotless, and a great credit to her owners.

By my estimate there might be half a dozen or so. The Faun motor version of the same hull seems rarer, just 2 of 3 I know of.

The owners of the you saw yesterday would be very welcome to join Fairey Owners Club.
