Hello

We are currently in Cadiz and unsure as to where to go for the christmas period ?
After a change of plan we are heading to the Med instead of the Canaries and haven't researched this part of the world.

We were thinking of La Linea anchorage (Near Gib) but unsure of what we will find.
Does anyone know of a good anchorage/marina that has a good atmosphere this time of year?
Maybe if there are other cruisers out there with the same dilema it woud be cool to meet up.

Many Thanks

Darren & Vicki

P.S. Sorry we haven't posted for a while had a busy year

Darren,

Personally, I would turn around and spend Xmas in Lagos, or head on to Almerimar. Gib has never sounded attractive and not sure I would want to spend Xmas there.

If you dont want to spend much money on marinas, you could always anchor in Alvor, just a short hop from Lagos, and nip into the marina for any celebrations you might get involved in.

Just my 2 pennorth

Hi - Gib not particularly attractive but having said that two boats with good friends living aboard are in Gib/La Linnea at this moment. We wintered in Rota which was nice; close to a small town with amenities, wifi in library, other liveaboards etc. Plus we sailed to Vadiz for the February feria. Alternatively you could try Gelves/Seville. And we understand that Almerimar is always popular but we haven't been there.

I spent last Christmas in Ceuta and had my best ever Christmas. Fabulous street decorations gave the town a Christmas atmosphere with evening concerts (jazz, folk, pop) in the plazas, Christmas carols in the Cathedral, the Strauss Philomarnic Orchestra performing free, New Year swimming races in the harbour, a temporary ice skating 'marquee'. Only two other liveaboard yachts in the marina so you have to make your entertainment away from the marina and basic knowledge of Spanish necessary to get the most out of it so it may not be everyone's cup of tea but I had a great time.

Are you seeking the company of other live-aboards? Or a place with strong local character?

Local character, it's difficult to beat Cadiz! And Estepona is pretty good, with a small live aboard community. Gib has to be one of the tackiest places around . . . if you can find a place. Lagos, fun, quite a big ex-pat community. And consider a trip up the river to Seville - now that's a grand city, usually with a few live aboards around.

Spoilt for choice really . . . more ideas on my website

I stayed with friends in Fuengirola several Xmases back and parked up up in the marina there, Several liveaboards staying for winter, no shortage of English, Spanish, Finnish, Chinese, Indian restaurants loadsa bars - tacky yes - good at Christmas - without doubt - step out of marina straight into town - strange mix

Thanks for the suggestions

I didn't think about the post properly before I published it. We wanted to keep moving forward and although the Algarve was very beautiful we did spend two months cruising it. We have also had a day in Seville which went slightly wrong (Very funny) But big cities are not our thing. We both enjoy being around other cruising folk and beautiful places. We were hoping to meet up with a few others at this quiet time of year.
Will check out the options in the med and if any other ideas are available we would be appreciative.

Thanks again

Almerimar would be good. This will be our third Christmas at Almerimar. Loads of people, English speaking but not all Brits. Good socials plus a Brit Christmas Lunch cooked by the yachties this year (make a booking for the lunch if you are coming). There is plenty of room in the harbour as far as I can see, but best to phone them (they speak impeccable English). The current is favourable from Gib but it's worth waiting for a westerly wind - i.e. not for the four days at least.

I wouldn't spend Christmas in Gib from choice.

Another vote for Almerimar . Also had an excellent time in Aguadulce a couple of years ago but since they messed about with the system I believe quite a few livaboards moved to Almerimar. Perhaps Lermain could comment.
(Ceuta sounds fun but haven't been there for 40 years.)
