About 30 years ago in Titchmarsh, I was allocated a berth over the VHF. After mooring up, I went ashore for a drink in the bar and saw this boat going in and out looking lost. A staff member then approached me and told me they had put me in an empty berth and the owner had returned as he had not told them he was returning that day. So I had to move to another berth. So sometimes staff get things wrong and neither the berth holder or me were very happy.

On several occassions I have been in a marina and gone to pay, but the office was not open and no one responded to a telephone call either. So I just left. Not collecting the money was their problem of having no staff, not mine as I had attempted to pay.

I showed 0 under the keel trying to get into SYH last Friday evening. The bar stewards would not answer my VHF to tell me if there was a vacant berth & i was stuck in the entrance channel. To make matters worse i had got sea sick off the knoll & was just about all in. When i floated off I eventually went to Shotley who were far more accomodating. So a minus 1 for SYH

Although many moons ago - they (SYH) turned me away about 0800 (26ft boat) I'd started very early doors from the Blackwater and was a touch nackered.

Had to go to Shotley where the welcome couldn't have been different, chap who came down from the tower said "was that you calling SYH" yup I said - the smile said it all.

I sailed as crew with a bunch moving their yacht some distance. Despite a very expensive boat, they did not like paying for mooring. It was a bit embarrassing at times, but they had skin like a rhino!

Tying up overnight on the fuel berth & then pretending that they'd just arrived early to buy fuel was one trick. Scamming a free berth from a yacht broker was another - they'd bought the boat from him and "were thinking of upgrading", ahem. Using the fishing boat only wharf, a sporting anglers private pontoon and a closed fishing coop moorings were others.

We had an idyllic day at Stone Point on Sunday, lazing about and a driftwood barbecue. All was fine until about 3 am when the ebb was ripping and back eddies made us shear so much that the anchor warp snagged the keel. I'm not at my best before dawn, but managed to deploy a kedge and untangle ourselves. Moved up towards Cormorant Creek, much more peaceful.

We're in Walton now. Hey, who would have thunk it - it's a LOT easier 4 hours into the rising tide. Fine fish & chips on the sea front and a stroll on the absolutely stuck in 1973 pier. The yacht basin is interesting.

We’re in SYH now. Can confirm the approach channel is shallow. Marina website says min 2m. We saw 2.3m 1.5 hours before LW, and I reckon the tide still had around 700mm to drop. We phoned ahead and booked a berth, and they did warn us there would be no one in the office after 17.30, but gave us all the codes we needed etc in advance. HPYC (lightship) were serving food till 8.30pm which was v handy. Facilities are v posh and it’s well worth a visit IMO.
