I visited Cherbourg about 2 weeks ago.
Hanging around the 'toilet block' were large numbers of youths.
Returning to the boat after an evening out the youths were still there and in such numbers that it was intimidating and acting in such a way as to make the girls in the party nervous.
As the night wore on the youths got noisier and started running up and down the pontoons kepping us awake.
The large numbers and obvious comsumption of alcohol made it unwise to venture out and challenge these youths.
I am wondering if this was a 'one off' incident or is it a regular thing.
We did not stop for a second night!

thanks for the warning. what night of the week was it and did you mention it to the marina staff when you left?

certainly doesn't give much confidence in their security.

This is the sort of thing that has forced us to avoid berthing anywhere that can be loosely described as a 'marina'.

A couple of years ago our boat was borded in the early hours of the morning, in Haslar marina, by a youth who appeared in the main hatchway with obviously bad intent. Scared my wife and daughter. When confronted he did a runner, but since then we've not stayed ina a marina anywhere. I must say this policy has improved our boating enjoyement no end!

We've never experienced this - in fact, Cherbourg is one of our favourite places.

What nationality were they?

We have seen it before but not on a regular basis fortunately, the shoreside part of the visitors marina is very open to the public. I suspect however if you had called the Capitanerie on the VHF they would have had the gendarmes arriving pretty quickly to sort them out.

I was there on Tue 29th June. I have spoken to a friend who was there a week later and had a similar experience. He tried to refuse to pay but the Marina management denied there was a problem.
I quite like Cherbourg as a destination but could not put up with sleepless nights due to loutish behaviour.

A 112 call would have sorted it.
In Nantes recently with a similar problem, I was very impressed with the speed of reaction by local forces of law and order! It probably did not comply with various rulings on human rights but it did the trick.
