I'm in Cherbourg at the moment and just extended my stay but they told me I must leave by the 10th July. They have about 100 large offshore race boats gathering for the Drheam Cup event.

That will make clearing in and out of France a bit tricky.

only if the tide is in. And it’s really quite a long way! Cherbourg is an all weather, all tide port of refuge.
1. The tide is in twice a day!
2. Go via Alderney or SPP.
3. The OP explained already that CH is Fubar'ed.

I was just trying to give an alternative to Cherbourg as there is an issue there (reported) and I think Carteret is your next closest where you can stamp in and out (as we have just done on our last trip).

I wasn’t criticising your reply I was criticising the situation. But we can’t discuss that!

Thank you for sharing this -I have mailed Hamon Magali at cherbourg as the email I had said the Cup started on 13th so as planning to arrive Sat 10th didn’t think it would be an issue and check out next morning.

This is my first post, so please be kind..... We plan to cross to Cherbourg on Tuesday 12th and have looked up the details about clearing entry into France and the useful info elsewhere on this Forum. . We have been to Cherbourg several times and as arrival tends to be late, generally anchor in the Rade. Which also has the benefit of being free....... I have just read with alarm this information about the port being full, and have sent an email to check. This is our first trip to France since before Covid. We have been to Carteret in the past but as noted above, arriving in Cherbourg doesn't take such precise timing on a cross channel trip. If we were to anchor in the Rade at Cherbourg, then set off to Carteret the following day, is this likely to be acceptable?

The advice I received from Cherbourg was that if you anchor and don’t go ashore the PAF don’t care and you don’t need to check in. However if you want to anchor and go ashore just walk round to the PAF office and get your passports stamped. They were very friendly and cooperative when we pitched up a few weeks ago. (Fill the paperwork in and email it to them first, and better still print the form out and take it with you too. )

Thanks for such a swift (in the middle of the night!) and helpful reply.

You’re welcome. I’ve been in Cherbourg a couple of times in the last few weeks and joined a webinar on the check in procedures care of the CA so I had some first hand knowledge to pass on…

PS if you do anchor and don’t want to walk to the PAF offices, they visit the Capitainerie in the Marina at 0900 and 1800 every day.

Anyway. answering your post was more interesting than trying to sort out the moderation queue of the forum in my insomnia.

Hi ,I had a very quick response from helpful Magali at cherbourg on question of staying on Sat 10th which is fine. The email I had previously said 13th was day1 of cup so it should all be over following week for exit stamp visit ?

I've been advised by the marina that there will be a "taxi boat" available to take crew of boats anchored in the Rade in to have passports stamped, VHF Ch 9. Having checked with the Vigie du Hornet on Ch 12 that it's OK to anchor (we've never done that before...but probably should have done.)

The PAF will attend the marina office to stamp passports at 9am and 6pm each day

Just left cherbourg today and plenty of space but they are gearing up for the Icoca 60 cup so plenty of tents on shore in course of contruction. The restaurant above marina office was fairly busy but got a table without booking before sunset.
