Just a short note to thanks to everyone who completed the survey, I’m looking to close this off at the end of the month so if you haven’t taken 5 to complete it then please do, the research will be better for it and you would have had you chance to “have your say”.

The links at the bottom then, bottom left on web site.

Thanks again

Peter Davey

Would love to fill in your survey but got stumped at the 2nd question - I feel "The Rest Of The World" as a location for the East Coast a bit off the mark! - Have you forgotton about us?

I'm afraid that the survey is too general for me to answer.

As an example, you have a section on chandlery. I have excellent service from one particular chandler (sod it, I'll name them - SeaTeach in Emsworth) probably because I go there often and spend a lot. However, some chandlers are next to useless when it comes to advice. One in Portsmouth area comes to mind where you would be lucky to encounter an assistant who even knows what they keep in stock.

I was informed by someone who knows far more than me that you should never offer an odd number of alternative answers as it encourages the respondent to go for the middle ground.

Perhaps a bit of professional help with your questionnaire would help?

Hi, no, I tried not to give people too many options in terms of regional breakdown as it make the analysis a nightmare and misleading if only a few people from one region responded. If I could know that I would get 2000 replies across the UK then it would be possible.

So I've tried not to alienate anyone and put you all in England, north midlands and south.

Hope you can understand the difficulties.

Thanks for giving it a go and if you feel like another bash at it I’d be eternally grateful.

Regards

Peter

Thanks for you comments and I understand the points you make, it's designed to be your general impression on balance on what you experience.

In terms of the technicalities of questionnaire design, I won't lecture you too much /forums/images/icons/wink.gif, having both a post graduate Diploma in marketing plus a Masters degree in the same.

To be brief there are two schools of thought on the subject, those that have scales with say 4 options forcing the respondent to make a choice or answer Don’t know making the analysis meaningless if everyone picked Don’t Know.

And those that have say 5 options where everyone picks the middle ground of say Average, again making things meaningless.

So the choice is yours /forums/images/icons/wink.gif unless you wish to comment further.

Peter

PS so if you feel like contributing to the survey I will be grateful if not then, don't complain if you get C***p service. Alternatively you could cast you vote of praise to SeaTech for all to see on my web site.

Given your much better knowledge of questionnaires I apologise for my suggestion that you seek professional assistance. Please accept it in the context of someone who definitely would need help.

Fully accepted, but I do appreciate your original points, it's difficult to strike a balance between the options.

And it gets even more fun if you leave blank fields for people to fill in, then you never know what you're going to get. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

In any case We will repeat the research each year and then look to measure the differences or trends in answers.

I'm sure there are different questions that can be asked so if you have any suggestions, please let me know

regards

peter

Sorry, but not able to participate in survey, as none of the E/C companies appear to be included, BUT.... Heron Yacht Services, B'sea. Superb and V.Competetive. French Marine, B'sea equally good, if a bit more pricy, Z.Spars Hadleigh, Great Circle Rigging, Manningtree, Foxes, Ipswich all give good value for money, and we are fortunate that they are not alone, perhaps the East Coasters, having less dosh are less inclined to patronise the rip-off merchants.......Tony W.
