Now that I am approaching the geriatric stage ( My travel insurer won't insure if aged over 70) I tend to do things with my mind on other things and can't remember whether I did them or not . Its the old saga of " did you turn off the gas dear " or " did I set the burglar alarm or not "

OK so to avoid turning around on the way to the airport I have produced a check list which I tick off on leaving the boat .
It goes like this
1 Gas off
2 seacocks shut
3 battery switches off
4 hatches dogged
5 bilge pumps on auto
6 Passports
7 tickets
8 Standing rigging checked
9 lockers locked
10 warps and springs checked and OK
11 fenders checked

etc
etc
I have a similar one when returning

This save me an awful lot of worry or so it seems

However I am still fallible .When I get home I start to think of the jobs I carefully listed down when on the boat to do at home and then when going through some careful measurements and sketches I hit some snags

eg make new Stainless steel backing plate for through deck bolts . OK got material , got bench drill ,got pitch of holes . Oh! Dear! No diameter of bolt hole . Zut Alors , Merde ! £"$$%^&!!!! ( Scottish oath ) You know how difficult it is to drill a hole in SS with a hand drill on a boat

As Burns said " The best laid plans of mice and men aft gang agley "

You know this must be a male thing . Mind easily diverted . Did a blond walk past the boat at the time I was taking measurements ? Who knows but I must not give up . I will have to produce another check list to check my check lists . And so it goes on and on and on .

Merry Christmas

Dog has other meanings . In this case it is a mechanical device for gripping and holding. for example a lathe has dogs on its chuck . In the case of a hatch they are the handles that you turn after closing the hatch . Do you have hatches on your boat ??
as to why well its to prevent little 4 legged rodents and perhaps two legged felons entering and causing mayhem .

if you have had the pleasure of a rat on board for any length of time you will be paranoic about dogging hatches as well as checking that any other vulnerable holes or orifices are secure .

Are your orifices secure ?

Are your orifices secure ?

Er.... I think so....
Another sad effect of approaching a certain age I fear! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I wouldn't worry too much, I find my 8 year old forgets why he went upstairs just as much as I do, he just doesn't worry about it.

I have check lists for when I leave the boat too. If I need things for next time I just scribble them on the check sheet. Of course I cant read my writing by the time I come to look at it again, so I am no better off. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Gas is the one I forget but fortunately it is in a separate unlocked cockpit locker so I ring the marina and ask them to go and switch it off. There's not much that they do for free but that's one.

A certain forumite has also obliged.

More lists required as you get older /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif even though there is less to remember /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No.4. MAKE sure SWHTBO is out of the cabin before Dogging up. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Dogging

A useful word with many connotations.

If you Google it with reference to a hatch - you'll probably get Catmandoo's meaning.

As with many other enquiries - the question posed determines how misleading the answer might be! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
