Check your EHIC card expiry date

When renewing on line make sure you use the nhs.uk website, then it it free. If you use the EHIC Direct webpage you have to pay £24! Didn't realise until I received renewed card and had paid !

That's because EHIC Direct is a private, profit-making body. They don't make a big secret of this (in fact they offer a link to the 'official' NHS EHIC web page), but you're not the first to be tripped up in this way.

I used to take out travel insurance as well as the EHIC card until I found out most holiday type insurance doesn't cover you if you have travelled over on a yacht even if the accident/illness occurs ashore.

Useful nudge for me too; my cards runs out within the week! Years ago my travel insurance "renewal" added, without indication, the fresh limitation that the yachting must be incidental to the holiday. I pointed out that made it useless to me and they removed the limitation without penalty.

...on a related subject, anyone who still harbours the misapprehension that UK driving licences are valid until you're 70 (and some still are) might wish to check theirs.

Sounds strange, but I've seen some very red faces...

Thanks for the tip. I am 70 on 13 December 2018 but the date when mine has to be renewed (4b on the front of the plastic card) shows 11 November 2018!

Those new fangled photocard licenses only last 10 year, my green one is on 45 years and counting.

Mine runs out in June, surprised to see it can be renewed on-line and FREE. https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence-at-70

Be careful. If you renew online at 70 you lose your "grandfather rights", and get limited to 3500kg max vehicle + 750kg trailer or 3500kg vehicle and trailer (over 750kg) If you want to retain over 3500kg vehicle and heavy trailer you need to complete D4 medical form and post application.

Interesting, if I renew on or before 11/11/18 will I also have to renew again on 13/12/18? I feel a call to DVLA might be in order - I may be some time!!!

But they do send a reminder......just had mine through the post.

You will get plenty of notice when the renewal comes close. Very straightforward if you have a passport and don't want to renew the goods vehicle and minibus bit of your licence (assuming you have it already).

Sorry - repeating Stork!

I know a couple of people who either didn't get or accidentally binned their reminders. Both were Med liveaboards, which can add obvious complications with mail. One of them was staggered to discover his driving licence had run out over two years before, a fact unnoticed by several companies from which he'd hired cars.

Thanks for the heads-up. Mine ran out in September. Fortunately I noticed the first entry that came up on Google didn't look right - I'd been caught like that on Australian visas by a site that sets out to look like a government department.
