Cheap AIS transponder?

. [There is no excuse these days to buy a single receiver AIS 'engine' when prices are so reasonable. I exchanged my early, primitive receiver for an inexpensive 'transponder' with genuine duplex parallel receivers long ago and immediately noted the improvement in static data updating.
What a crass statement. I can think of a good reason: the one that most people face. There are people on here whose entire boat doesn't cost much more than an "affordable" duplex transponder and a basic AIS unit is a huge safety improvement over not having one..

Thing is these days a dual channel reciever costs little more than a single channel. I have a Nasa and it's fine, does the job. If buying now though for not much more you could get a digital yacht real dual channel reciever.

Which was my point. Why pay £139.64 for a single receiver unit when there are so many state-of-the-art duplex units at even less cost? See any number of them here.

NASA pioneered the inexpensive receiver-only AIS units but they have long been overtaken by competitor technology in that field.

That's a base map you're talking about, it's only purpose is to show you where you are in the world in a very zoomed out view. The full K-Chart (several hundred MB download for Europe) is C-Map. Example: http://avesmarine.com/K-charts/
I have followed the link and note the ONWA plotter is identical to the Matustec, so simply re-badged. I just need to get an SD card to download the charts to, then I will see how they compare with the Chap I currently have, at minimum will increase the range I have available.

Old thread or not, whilst one can always find something somewhere on t'internet cheaper than an in country physical supplier, you'll have to look a long way to find a better supplier for the excellent ONWA kit than this guy:

Sales and after sales service best I've come across. I have no connection other than being a very satisfied customer.

Absolutely. I was singing Alan's praises on another thread a couple of years ago when I bought an Onwa AIS from him, and he was very helpful again earlier this year when I moved it to my new boat.
