I have ordered 4 sets of charts & books from NV charts in the Netherlands on behalf of our members who are going with me on a cruise in August Value £280 (circa£305 euros)
They are being sent from the supplier via DHL & when leaving the EU will be VAT exempt.
However, VAT will be charged once they enter the UK via customs & I do expect DHL to make a charge. Ideally I need these by 4 August as I will be leaving earlier than the others who will be leaving 20 August. My wife can take delivery & pass the charts on if really necessary but a nuisance
The charts are not all in stock so will not leave Holland until 29 July. That gives 6 days to get here
Has anyone experience of how DHL handle the VAT, which I assume I will have to pay prior to delivery & how long it will take to get through customs for goods arriving from the EU.
Also how much will DHL usually rob me for the administration charge
Has anyone experience of this?
Please do not go into rants about Brexit- It has happened - I voted for it- I accept that it will cause issues. I just want an answer to my question please

Are Maps/Charts not zero rated like books?

As for DHL - highly variable! Good chance they would arrive on time, but nothing is certain one week deliveries take 3-4 days the next you are still chasing it stuck in UK customs 3 weeks later. I'm not sure what DHL do for domestic deliveries - some couriers turn up with card reader, others stick a card through your door (or email you) to pay charges before they release it. Cost are usually about £8-20 for processing.

Sending stuff the other way by DHL delivery was within the normal 48 hours, vat invoice came a few weeks later. Admin charge was £15 if I remember correctly.

Not sure what charts your buying but we using Navionics on iPad and there are find even in land .
Firstly none of us use Ipad for navigation. We all have decent chart plotters.
Being sensible mariners we all require paper charts of the coast (1801) & the first part of the southern delta (1805) plus to stay legal the ANWB Wateralmanak 1 2021/2022 . I have bought 4 copies of Brian Navin's "Cruising guide to the Netherlands" from Book Harbour. NV charts are really good charts. I have used them for a while
1801 is the one causing the problem, as it is only just about to be issued. We particularly want it, as it covers the coast from Nieuport, past Ostend ( where out journey starts proper) then covers all the places that one might enter or depart the canals in particular Breskens & Flushing. Roompot & Rotterdam
If any of the cruise party want other documents, ie the standing mast route & ANWB Wateralmanak 2, they can get them from the chandler in Breskens, or the one in Middleburg. It is difficult trying to sort these out for a group as it is.
It is like herding cats.

I think that you missunderstood me. I was not trying to knock back your suggestion. In many cases suggestions made "on the fly" can lead to some interesting additions to the thread. Someone else reading this post may well benifit from what you have said. But regardless of people's love of the smart phone & Ipad, a chart is an essential tool

I have two copies of Inland Waterways of the Netherlands by Busby and Broad that you can borrow.
Roger. I would like to have a look at one please. I did want to buy them, but was not sure if relevant. If they are then I will buy new .
Problem is that I will only be able to get to the marina Sunday through toThursday. Then 02 to 04 august . after that I am off to Ostend
This Friday & Saturday I am driving the ferry ramp for the old gaffers race at stone sailing club so they can get ashore without wet feet . One has to be on the ball with the old gaffers, after they have been driven to drink by the sound of the "Hoolies"
Not sure about "By popular demand", but it certainly helps bar sales?

I'll leave one, well wrapped up, in your cockpit tomorrow.

Have you tried entering or departing ports with a C passage chart? I would not use it for entering the Roompot, or crossing from Breskens to Vlissengen at night, where one has to first clear a sand bank, then do a dog leg across the shipping lane . C 30 is Ok for most of the N sea crossings from the Thames, but the Dutch have some difficult areas to watch for & their rules are enforced more strictly over there than here. I also find that the presentation is superior to Imray. But that is a personal choice. It is cheaper to buy the latest Dutch chart than to upgrade my chart plotter card- if I wanted to go down the electronic route- which I do not want to do. Neither do my fellow cruiser friends .
I find simple things, like seeing the shipping lanes, on my Garmin plotter virtually impossible & always have to revert to a chart.
One only has to look at Roger Caspar's regular chart updates on the east coast forum to see the amendments along that southern stretch of coast to realise that one could easily miss some important chart corrections . Hence we want the latest Dutch 1801 due very soon. Hopefully before we leave

Hi Daydream Believer, are you still looking for a DHL solution? I’ve been sending birthday presents to the UK from Netherlands and Germany recently via DHL and sorry to report the service has been fairly unpredictable. A couple of ideas though… First, what’s your port of entry? Could you have the charts sent to a marina there as post restante, and only buy the charts you need from the uk?
Second (and the reason I came onto this thread), is the ANWB Wateralmanak available as PDF? I’ve read that as long as you have it available onboard, it’s acceptable to the waterpolice, especially as many of us British do not have good enough Dutch to read it. If anyone has a link to a free download, I’d be grateful.
As an aside, I’ve sailed a couple months now in the Netherlands with NV atlases for the Delta region including the Roompot from the north and haven’t found a fault with them yet. (I’ve just bought an iPad with navionics as well as a backup, but perhaps I shouldn’t mention it ;))

My port of entry will be Ostend.I am leaving on 5 Aug for a club weekend in Ramsgate then I will carry on to Ostend for the Paulusfeesten on 09 - 15 aug. Then i will wait for a cruise from the club arriving on 21 aug.
So charts really need to be with me by 04 aug. No Uk people will have them as NV have not got them from the printers yet as they will be hot off the press.
So i could have them sent to the RNSYC but the others want to study them beforehand. My wife will be at home so she should be able to receive them if late & hand them to the others & one of them can bring me my copies.
I am not certain about the PDFs & it would be best to have ANWB Wateralmanak 1 & 2 & pick up the standing mast route map in Breskens as one can work out the details with a bit of common sense. I can write notes on it but I cannot get on with PDFs with 300 pages. They used to have the chart book with the details on it & i managed that so I reckon i can suss book 2.
Just hope that the charts & books either arrive with me or the wife on time.Otherwise £ 400 wasted
