Hmmm....Trouble is I live in Essex, finding a virgin here is about as common as finding rocking horse shite!

The reason that the superstition arose is that in times gone by, the name of a boat was carved into the main beam. If they changed the name of a boat, they had to carve out the old name and recarve the name in the same beam thus weakening the beam, often with the result that in heavy seas, the beam broke and the boat sank. Name changing got the blame.

When I bought my first boat, she was called 'Double Barrel'. She had been owned by a Mr Cannon. I didn't think that was suitable for a crew of one lady (that's me) and two spaniels. So I changed the the name to 'Solitaire'. This was the third name the boat had possessed. But for me she was a lovely thing; easy to sail, comfortable, and looked after me really well. When I wanted to sell, the first person who looked bought her. Sold in a week!
When we bought 'Cornish Maid', she was called 'Spirit of Hiraeth', which again, I thought a bit of a mouthful. But she has been again a lovely boat, so we have bought her loads of presents. Last thing to go on will be the eletric windlass. Then we can launch!!

Never believed in this particular one - mainly because I never liked the names any of my boats came with.

Now, as I get older, I am beginning to realise why mans alloted mortal span is three score years and ten. Live much longer and you run out of useable new names for the latest boat (and I am not talking about the names you can call her when you miss stays going about, or whatever....)

But bad luck? No, never found it made any difference. Some were 'lucky' boats, where everything went right. Some were not, and seemed to be accident prone. But I never saw it had anything to do with re-naming.

Here in NZ there is a Maori boat renaming ceremony that involves getting a virgin to pee in the bilges. I didn't bother!

What about the official angle on renaming ? we want to rename our new boat but what do you register it under, SSR or part 1? Or dont people bother and just rename and thats it.
