I have been advised to change from Cruiser 250 to Seajet Shogun 033 when I next anti-foul my sailing boat. She is kept on a swinging mooring on the Beaulieu. Sensible?

Of the two, Cruiser 250 is likely to give better results. It has a higher specific gravity (1.78 vs 1.62) so has more copper oxide in it. Who advised you to change, and did they explain why?

If you want to change, go for something like Micron 350, which has a specific gravity of 2.18 - indicating much more of the active ingredients.

Whatever you choose, it will only work satisfactorily if you apply enough paint.

Seajet 033 came ahead of both Cruiser Uno (which became 250) and Micron Extra (now 350?) in the 2016 PBO test in Chichester and Hamble which may be why they are suggesting it. Ive no idea if the formulations have changed since then

having used /applied both Micron Extra 2 and Mircon 350, they appear to me to be completely different products. Also the 350 appears to have far superior performance on my yacht.

I have always used Cruiser Uno or one it’s successive variants, Cruiser EU and latterly Cruiser 250. I moved my boat back to the Solent from Poole in early 2019.

I don’t know whether 2019 was a particularly bad year for growth or whether Cruiser 250 just isn‘t suitable for the Beaulieu but I had by far the worst fouling I have experienced. Because of lockdown I didn’t anti-foul last year. The suggestion came from a professional boat finisher working in the yard and was on offered on the basis that it is what ‘he always uses’.

I have always used the same quantity each year so I don’t think it has been applied too thinly.

I think PVB has the basis, sort out the AFs with highest SG, as it (or they) have the most copper in them, then apply liberally - if you want to maximise life. But there is no point in maximising life if you need to slip to change anodes and or treat props every year and the AF last 18 months. It might be better to use a cheaper AF to match AF, prop and anode performance to be similar.

That test persuaded me to use seajet 033 in 2017 for The Hamble. I wasn't impressed and used Micron Ultra 2 the following year, which was a bit better. For 2019 it got done with Jotun Seaforce and that's better still (but it's for professional use only).

Thanks for the suggestions and advice. I haven’t been able to get any more specific recommendations relative to the Beaulieu but am minded to just stick with Cruiser 250 and perhaps slightly increase the amount I have been using to see how it performs. It is cheaper and the reported benefits of 033 seem overstated.

POSTSCRIPT: We lifted this morning and despite not antifouling last season, the weed growth was the least I have ever had. We were ashore from March to July 2020 but anticipating lockdown, we re-launched having only changed the anodes. I am particularly surprised as today is the first day she has been moved in 10 months.
