I would be inclined to say don't change for the sake of change. If you are looking for more subscribers, maybe more publicity is required.

If you do decide to change, make sure the new name avoids any confusion with the RNLI's SEA Check scheme.

I would make sense to give the form a more pertinent title to what it represents but if that title is then going to get abbreviated there does not seem any point to change.

As has been suggested perhaps a new name with CG66 in brackets at the end.

:DPresumably any change will have to be debated and approved by the EU in triplicate:D

Don't change the name, it is well established and many people know immediately what it is. Perhaps just publicise it more.

They changed the name of the E111 to the EHIC some years ago and you only have to look at this thread to see people still refer to it as the E111 - changing names introduces confusion for at least a generation by having the same thing called by more than one name.

The official title is:

CG66 - The Voluntary Safety Identification Scheme

There no reason why CG66 can't remain part of the full blown title for the Altzheimer sufferers like meself.

CG66, Safety ID form.

Then either CG66, or Safety ID will be sufficient conversationally. Safety is the core aim & everyone understands the abbreviation ID, even if they are completely non-boaty. Voluntary & Scheme are pretty well superfluous adjetives.

ICE CG66

Some folk have an In Case of Emergency number in their moby, it's not the same but it's not that different, and some folk already use the term.
The form with the info on will still be the CG66 and it's worth keeping a referance to that.

CG66 is absolutely fine. What might help take-up is a better understanding of what it is used for. Is it simply a database used when a named vessel is involved in an incident or are there other uses? Who has access - is it just the CG or is it available to the jack-booted Border Agency, etc.?
How about free time-expired flare pick-up for CG66 fillers-in?

Promotion of the CG66 is one of my aims, watch this space. Only the CG has access and I can assure you it is for Search and Rescue purposes only.

Those who know about it will continue to call it by the meaningless initials. However, you are presumably not appealing to them, they already know what it means.

There are all those like myself who have heard the initials, and immediately switched off mentally - "Another irritating form" ( I have at last checked what it is and signed up. Lack of interest due to lack of awareness has meant that this has taken years to happen!)

There is also the vastly larger group of people who have not heard of it, or ignored the meaningless initials, and YES, you do need a simple meaningful phrase for it. NOT INITIALS!

Why not keep your present name and perhaps just put the initials at the end.
"The Voluntary Safety Identification Scheme - (CG66)" as someone else said.

Then publicise it!

Hope that helps.

Lets call it that then. Next

Agree. I think that covers just about all the thoughts in this thread. Maybe the only thing to do is make sure that the full title, not just the code, is used in any context where those new to the scheme might see it.

Time for a new acronym

COastguard Voluntary Emergency Register
or
Coastguard Optional Vessel Essentials Register

Either way, radio question from CG would be "Are you COVERed?"

CG66

I would say keep the name which is familiar to many of us of old, and easy to say on the radio. Any problem with lack of registrations is probably one of education. I always mention it on my SRC and Day Skipper Courses, and give out the latest CG66 to students as well as mentioning the online registration.

The MCA produces loads of leaflets eg MCA/064 on msi, MCA/098 on Solas, MCA/103 on GMDSS etc. Is there one on CG66? If there is I don't know about it.

BUT - as soon as the word database is mentioned some people go white and pale and think of dastardly government plots to know all that we are doing. I would avoid the word database in any title.

Lots of things get referred to by form numbers in government and military organisations.

FMT600 - military driving license
MoD90 - Army ID card
G1098 - locally-issued equipment

The Civil Service do it too, though I can't think of any examples.

eg; HMRC's P45, P60, P2,P6, P11D-all common PAYE forms, Pete;)

Definitely keep CG66, Searush's idea pretty good.
Why not (CG66)-Vessel Safety Data Record= gives you two short names; CG66 or VSDR.
tells you what it does too!
