Can I just say thank you to everyone who took the time to reply to the thread. It's been interesting!

To sum up I think on the whole the opinion was to not change the name from CG66, publicise it some more and improve the system.

Thank you again.

Dear me.

It is a voluntary safety identification database. You fill in their CG66 form (on-line if you wish) to give them details of your boat & its appearance (with pic if possible). If someone (ie your designated shore based person) reports you are overdue, then the SAR people know what they are looking for. If you have filed a passage report, they will also know where to look.

The idea is you keep your mum, brother, wife or whoever, informed about what you are doing, where you are going & how long it should take. You update them with your progress &any changes with regular contact. If they don't hear from you as agreed, they can call the CG & they will start to look for you. They will usually start with the likely harbours on your route & have been known to find people in clubs/ pubs in the past. If that fails, they may then start a full scale search.

What's hard or intrusive about that? (not you DigbyD, the "fear of regulation" brigade)

Thanks for that Searush. I think I must have been out of the country since before this appeared. No I don't think it is intrusive but the nanny state is always well meaning. I was brought up to be self sufficient and not to expect people to put themselves at risk on my behalf. That dosn't mean that I wouldn't shout MAYDAY if me & mine were at risk. :)

A big thankyou for you and your team promoting and working on this scheme which can only help, especially if the CG stations in their reduced numbers fail to cope.

The official title is:

CG66 - The Voluntary Safety Identification Scheme

And that is all that's needed.

The only thing I would add is that perhaps the title should be included a bit more on the documentation/publicity, and not just the "CG66" bit.

(I'm I BTW, just look up "Rowana")
