Certificate of Competance

We are in the process of purchasing a second hand yacht in Spain (british registered boat). I have RYA Day skipper and Yachtmaster Theory. Anyone tell me whether I need a "Certificate of Competance" and where I can find out more information about this before we sail away! Thanks.

Theoretically you don\'t need one, but ...

... the RYA advises that Spanish harbour masters don't always appreciate this, and recommend that you hold an International Certificate of Competence. The RYA will issue you with one on request if you hold a Day Skipper (practical) certificate.

I have never been asked myself in Spain ... just as well as I don't hold one.

PS There are various bits of paper you are supposed to carry in Spain. These are:

- Crew passports
- Yacht's registration certificate
- Proof of VAT status
- Radio licence and radio operators certificate, if the yacht has a VHF
- Insurance cover note, with a Spanish translation.

I've only ever been asked to show the first two in Spain.

Information like this can be obtained from the RYA 'Foreign Cruising' booklet for Europe, price around £5.
