Has anyone any experience of getting a 24-28' imported (from the USA) boat through RCD approval ?

If so, were there any problems ?

Thought about it when buying first boat early last year (poss 2nd hand from the goood old US of A) but was advised against. Apparently more trouble than it's worth. Unless anyone else has had different experience of this? Instead, bought new one already certified (I should have been....buying brand new!!!) Now have great 2nd hand American boat Chaparral Signature, but was already certified (again) when imported.

I was in the same situation earlier in the year, bought new in the UK.

I am looking to get a bigger boat this year & I bet the importers haven't dropped their prices to reflect the falling US$.

Every-one I have spoken to, like you, has been told it's difficult, but no-one seems to have any first hand experience.

For the RCD I understand that the wheeze is to go for Cat E approval which is cheap and easy - this gets you around some legal issues.

Cat E ?, is that the one where you just ignore the system completely & hope the harbour master & insurance company don't notice ?

Brian,

While I don't like needless bureacracy, the penalities on this one are a bit too high for me to gamble on.

I haven't come across Cat E, so my comment was just a guess.

Hi

many exporters in the states now realise its best to offer ce approval before shipping so just find a good supplier who can organsie it over there.

over here it isnt too bad to get done know many who have done it, still saves thousands on the price of boats here, ce proofing will do a 26 footer for about £1500 if its a boat currently sold already over here.

just as a point as the Ce plating didnt come in until 1997 any boat once in the country of that age or older cannot be distinguished from the boats that were built to be sold here, again know of many in circulation and i know many people out there must have bought them in good faith from UK second hand dealers and not know their boat orginated in the USA, its only after 1997 that all boats had ce plate on thus if you bring one over of that age or newer without one then a surveyor will spot it hasnt got one. not suggesting you should go this route to just save a thousand or so best get it done then bring it over.

Kevin
