2. ENGLAND - East Coast - Depths. - This is a Preliminary Notice which is part of a series of seven other Preliminary Notices published in the second part of 2024 and one earlier this year. The series has published 36 reductions of depths from Winterton Ness and Kessingland. This Notice is adding four reductions of depth from Hemsby Hole to just north of Great Yarmouth. As such the new reductions should not hinder leisure craft. The notices in in 2025 is 448(P) and 2024 are: 4389(P), 4628(P), 4900(P), 5001(P), 5018(P), 5069(P) and 5165(P). You can access the images for those in the 2024 list.
This notice has one reduction of depth right in the middle between the Newcome Sand PHB and the S. Holm SCB (i.e. the Stanford Channel south entrance). At 3.6m there is significant water for leisure craft but the entrance continues to reduce!
3. BELGIUM - Buoyage. Scientific instruments. - Three yellow special purpose light-buoys, X-Shape topmarks, Fl.Y.5s, marking scientific instruments, have been established west of Oostende harbour.

Local

1. Sea Reach - London Gateway Berth 5 Ground Investigation Works -
Commencing on or around 3rd February 2025 marine ground investigation works by Causeway Geotech Ltd will commence as part of DP World London Gateway’s extension project. The works, which are expected to last for six weeks, will be undertaken by Jack-up barge “CAUSEWAY GIANT 1” (24m x 17m) in 13 bore hole locations positioned alongside the berth face of berth 5 (in alignment with berth 4). Workboat “MPV BULLDOG” & “MV SNOOPDOG” will be in attendance.
Exclusion zone of 75 m clearance of planned berth position of a vessel on berth 4 (during manoeuvring, assisting tugs are permitted to be within the 75 m exclusion zone around the barge). Exclusion zone of 100 m from the JUB barge to passing traffic. All vessels involved with the works will maintain a continuous listening watch on VHF Channel 68.
2. Woolwich Reach - Environment Agency Thames Barrier Closures Commencing 1st May 2025 - The Thames Flood Barrier will be closed once a month for test purposes, in accordance with a programme issued for a period of six months, commencing 07 November 2024. Listed below are the times between which the Thames Barrier will be closed to navigation for test purposes.During these periods’ navigation in the Thames Barrier Control Zone, between Margaretness and Blackwall Point, will be restricted and any movements in this area will require permission from London VTS.

May Monday 19th 11:00 to 13:40
June Monday 16th 10:30 to 13:00
July Monday 14th 09:50 to 12:20
August Tuesday 12th 09:45 to 12:15
September Sunday 07th 07:15 to 17:15
October Thursday 09th 09:10 to 11:40
The closures will be confirmed and promulgated by London VTS from 24 hours in advance of the operation by VHF radio on routine river broadcasts. From the start of each closing procedure until completion of the opening procedure vessels will be prohibited from transiting the Thames Barrier. Most closures are for approximately 2½ hours over the respective low waters. No vessel is to pass Margaretness inward bound or Blackwall Point outward bound once a Thames Barrier closure has commenced unless authorised by London VTS. GATE CLOSURES
In addition to the full Thames Barrier closures there will be frequent closures of individual gates for maintenance and training purposes, subject to a programme issued by the Environment Agency. The closure of individual gates will change the spans available for navigation.
Information regarding these gate closures will be promulgated by London VTS on VHF Channel 14 routine river broadcasts. During each full Thames Barrier or individual gate closure(s), illuminated red crosses will be displayed on both sides of the gate(s) indicating that the gate(s) are closed to navigation
3. Thames Estuary - Unexploded Ordnance - This Notice supersedes the following PLA Notices to Mariners, which are all hereby cancelled: L19-24; L21-24; L25-24; L28-24; L29-24; L33-24; L34-24; L39-24; L41-24 Unexploded ordnance (UXO) located at position: 51˚ 28’.72 N
000˚ 44’.65 E & which was notified to mariners via PLA Notice to Mariners L29-24 has now been cleared. Mariners are advised that the following UXOs previously notified to mariners via PLA Notices to Mariners remain in situ and there are no prospects at this time for these to be cleared. The Lat and Long is listed in the notice which can be seen in the Local List at: Notices to Mariners.
In the interests of safety, vessels are advised to keep clear of the above positions at all times, taking into account the advised safety zone radius for each. Vessels are particularly cautioned against anchoring, trawling or otherwise interacting with the seabed in the vicinity of the above positions. Six of the ordnance are on the Nore Sand, northeast of the Mid Swatch SHB, others are in deep and busy waters viz: close to the Yantlet Channel and in the Oaze deep water.
4. Obstructions – Boulders in Harwich Harbour – Update 1 -
boulders have been identified in Harwich Harbour as follows:

2 51° 56.853’N 1° 18.541’E 15.29m
3 51° 56.571’N 1° 18.574’E 15.60m There is an image in Local List. All well in deep water
5. Surveyed Depths – Harwich Deep Water Channel – Update 1 - the latest hydrographic surveys showing depths in the Harwich Deep Water Channel. The minimum available depth of water on the centreline is approx. 15.7m below chart datum in the area of Number 1 Buoy, with the channel predominately at 16.0m BCD or greater. There are shallower sections including sand waves on the centreline and towards the channel edges Contact Harwich VTS or Haven Pilots for further information. There are 16 pages of chartlets which you can download from the Local List - but it is all of the DW channel.
6. Dredging and Survey Operations – Update 2 - dredging and survey operations are taking place as follows:
➢ Smit Neyland (Callsign: VQGN5) – is carrying out survey operations around Harwich
Harbour and Felixstowe berths until around 03 February 2025.
➢ Strandway (IMO: 9664457) – is undertaking trailing suction hopper dredging operations in
Harwich Harbour, Felixstowe berths and the Harwich Deep Water Channel until around 07
February 2025.
➢ MTS Valour (IMO: 9407299) – is undertaking plough dredging in Harwich Harbour,
Felixstowe berths and at Harwich International Port until around 05 February 2025.

7. Lowestoft Harbour Entrance – Dive Activity North and South Piers - Diving Activity is scheduled to be undertaken on the North and South Pier Structures at Lowestoft Harbour entrance on Monday 3rd and Tues 4th February. Diving is expected to take place as follows:-
Mon 3rd – South Pier between approx. 10:30hrs and 13:00hrs: Tues 4th – North Pier between approx. 11:00hrs and 13:30hrs.
If weather delayed, activities may also be undertaken on Wednesday 5th, between approx. 12:00hrs and 1430hrs. Activity will be from Quayside (South Pier), and a small Rigid Inflatable craft (North Pier). Divers will monitor VHF Ch14 and will use call sign ‘Red 7 Divers’.
Diving Activity will be signified by flag ‘Alpha’. Diving will need to be suspended to accommodate large commercial vessel movements. Smaller commercial vessels, fishing vessels and leisure craft transits may be permitted – all movements will be co-ordinated by Lowestoft Port Control. All vessels are requested to provide the Dive area a wide berth and pass at slow speed to minimise vessel wash.
