CAV filter question

Hi folks does anyone know the name of this type or fitting/connection ?

It attaches to my primary fuel filter as you can see and I need to replace the fuel lines as part of a new fuel tank install so I think I will need to replace this connection. Or can I just use a jubilee clip and clamp the hose on instead, just like the other hose is done on the outlet side of the filter ?
Thanks

Right great thanks
Is there any reason not to just clamp these to the filter using a jubilee clip like the other hose is done ?

The CAV can use several different fittings: banjo, hose barbs, etc etc you may choose what suits best your layout (straight, 90°, etc etc).
Careful the female threads in the filter head can be two different types, one metric one imperial, check which is yours before ordering new fittings.

If you want to do that, then why not just cut the hose say 3" from the banjo and use a bit of copper pipe with jubilee clips to join the two rubber hoses together?
Or you could use an on/off valve with a couple of bits of pipe as a joint.

Just checked, it s either 1/2" UNF or metric 14 x 1.5

examples of fittings, I think this is the original CAV technical drawing, there may be several other available fittings (surely those at 90°)

CAV are now Delphi. But check that yours is a true CAV pattern first. There are a lot of copies & the threads are not all the same. Better to take the unit off & go into a motor factor or tractor/ agricultural place & try a fitting. You could cut the banjo off, which is harder to get a good seal & put a straight fitting on, if your hose is long enough. Then you are OK with a couple of jubilee fittings. You can also make sure you get the correct diameter for your hose.
If you have had problems seating the filter, then it is a fair bet that yours is not a true CAV. ( I know from harsh experience)

I'm planning on moving the filter to in front of the engine so I will need to change the hoses. At the moment it's behind the engine
Maybe it is time to shell out for one of these fancy racor things I've been reading about. Just object to the £200!
Is there a way of knowing if it is a genuine CAV?
Thanks

If you're going to move it anyway, you might consider a spin-on filter, which will be easier to change. SSL Diesel have them for just over 20 quid.

Carefully cut the crimp lengthways with a junior hacksaw and peel the crimp off. The fitting can then have a hise pushed and clipped on. Nothing wrong with hose clips if done properly. Both my Beneteaus have/had them as std. Be aware that CAV housings had 1/2” unf threads at one point

Cheers PVB how would you prime that filter ?mine has a black button thing on the top of it to prime it

Use the engine's lift pump lever to prime it. Or fit a rubber bulb pump inline. And you could pour diesel into the new filter before fitting it, to minimise priming.

My Lombardini lift pump would prime the filter easily, but my current Volvo one will never do it, regardless of where the flywheel is positioned. If you are going to re arrange the fuel pipe,s I recommend a bulb primer (for diesel) every time. Saves rotating the flywheel & is far quicker in an emergency. Also saves running the starter for extended periods or if trying to do it single handed when one cannot push the start button & adjust the bleed screws

I've also used the spin-on filter as supplied by SSL Diesel - makes changing the filter VERY simple and easy - AND they won't leak like the convential CAV filter when fitting a new filter! They also do a good deal on the spin-on filters. Just make sure you get the correct threads - either UNF or Metric.

Hi I got one of these spin on cav filters and I'm about to connect it up. There are 4 ports for hoses, i presume that's fuel in and fuel out and the other 2 are blanked off.
Question is which is fuel in and which is fuel out? If I look inside 2 of the ports I can see a hole going down into the filter- i don't know if that's fuel in or out ?
Also there are 2 bolts on the top - one is a bleed, presumably the one with the screwdriver head ? What's the other one?
I've emailed ssdiesel several times and they keep promising to get back to me with an answer but I've given up now. The filter didn't come with any instructions.
Thanks

Racor copies available for about £35, mine was identical to origina and came with hose tails of both 8mm and 10mm, did put original filter in though

Fuel is drawn from the bowl up through the filter and out top centre, if I remember correctly.
So the fuel hose attaches to the top of the filter ? Surely it goes out one of the ports on the side ?
Anyone else have one of these filters that can help ?
It's an sfa11 and takes a screw on delphi 496 filter
Thanks
