I am transfering a personalised plate to a new vehicle soon. What is the police's stance these days. I know it is ilegal to space the lettering incorrectly but if the font and everything else is correct in reality am I still going to get hung or are dibble relaxed about it.

I think you are taking a big risk if you rely on members of the forum to help you assess the risk !

The law is plain....you need to make your own mind up whether or not you want to take the risk of meeting a particularly diligent mr plod who wants to enforce it when he sees your motor!

It would take a particularly malevolent and anti-social git, with a grudge against people in general, to nick you for incorrect spacing on your plates. Given the personalities of many of HM Constabulary's finest, I'd give it about 10 minutes before you're pulled.

Err, dunno really, but my guess is that, unless you're unlucky, you probably won't get done, but that it would be a handy justification (akin to an indicator not working) for Plod to pull you over and then discover that you're under the influence, or an international criminal on the run from your last diamond heist.

I think the plates have to be the right spacing for MOT etc. if you hang on to the car for that long?

You'll be unlucky to be pulled just for incorrect spacing and even then only a truly vindictive BiB will give you a ticket (perhaps a vehicle defect rectification notice). Using 'wrong' colour screw caps is a different matter - I believe BiB are taking that seriously nowadays. In any event, it is (at the moment) a non-endorsable offence.

I know someone who was stopped twice for misspaced plates (had V60 *** spaced as V6 0 *** as car was a V6), fined both times and told if he didn't correct then the plates would be withdrawn from him.

Anyway, isn't it a bit "wannabe" to mess about with the spacing to create a personal plate? Bit like a fake Rolex, it announces to the world "Look what I wanted but couldn't afford so went for this cheapy option"?

Good point. Howver finding a plate suitable because of my initials containing a I or rather a 1 is very difficult. There is the exact plate with 1 and then my other two initials available at a cost of £100K. I have to admit that its too rich for me.

It also gives them a reason to stop you, and probably not relevant a mot failure I think.

Apparently there is a very rare option on the BMW X5 regarding the number plates which very few owners are aware of.

It would appear that it is actually possible to buy one without a personal plate!

Don't think anyone's actually done it yet mind...

My boss has had an 'illegally spaced' plate for the last 3 years and never been troubled by the police.

He does however, keep a correctly spaced set in the trunk for MOT inspections and in case 'somebody' insists they are changed then and there

I would just like to add that I would not dismiss somebody for 'playing' with their plate as opposed to spending 100K on a vanity plate. Better things to spend it on..

Surely 'arranging' the spacing is "making the most of the cards you have been dealt" ?

It seems to vary from area to area, Northamptonshiore are/were very hot on it making lost of money for local garages to fill out the peper work to confirm it is fixed. Your car would fail an MOT with the spacing wrong so is illegal but many seem to get away with it for years, it depends how difficult it is to read and if you are making numbers look like letters etc.

Sloshed, I think your sig neatly sums up the majority of those who doctor number plates to make them into "personal plates"

Without trying to criticise anyone's choice I would be interested to know why personalised plates appeal.

Possible reasons seem to be:

1 Important device to help find the car in a big car park. So the remote's not working today then?

2 Vaguely amusing. I could buy that, but it seems a bit of an effort for not much of a result.

3 Disguise the age of the vehicle. Give me a small break! Most people with the vaguest interest in cars know that if you've got a 5 series beemer without sidelights around the main lights it is pre 2000 etc.

4 Major style statement. Hardly. For example K55 BJB, which could be doctored to look a bit like "KISS BJB" (yes, i know, who'd want to) is available today for £250.

Must admit that the appeal of 'vanity' plates, to give them their most apt title, is lost on me.

As for the police approach to illegal spacing and other vain plate fiddling - well up until now they haven't bothered with them much unless they were blatant and illegible, but all that's changing.

Revenue generation cameras are going all digital and learning to recognise plates for themself instead of some self-satisified git at the camera 'safety' partnership deciphering them. This means that plod is going to start coming down like a ton of bricks on dodgy plates.

See here for the rules:

I have mine for the the opposite reason, I normally buy new or fairly new cars and dont want everyone knowing how much I can afford to spend on a car, so I put a personal plate on it, if anyone asks I make out it is an older model than it actually is.

Anyway what harm do they do?
