I have never trusted just putting an automatic in P I like to put the handbrake on as well. SWMBO does not usually bother with that.

I believe it is described in the manual, switching off the engine will usually lead to the park being engaged if for some reason it hasn't already been selected.

They fitted that feature as some people were reversing while hanging out of open driver's door so they could see better. But a few owners fell out while reversing and the car, being an automatic, drove over the top of them. A few people were killed by their own cars. Seemed to happen more often in America.

My BMW certainly does that. Should be fail safe / idiot proof.

But maybe the M4 gearbox is different. Presume it has a “launch control” button - wonder if they pressed that

One comes to a stop with foot on the brake. Next one would move the gear lever to park and turn off the engine before getting out.
Why would anyone come to a stop and just get out. Moment you let go of brake pedal car would move before you got out the door? Strange..
I wonder is he parks his boat on the beach ?
