You can use any CCTV camera. It can be set to record only when there is motion at various sensitivities and variable frame rate and resolution.
I've installed 2 for CCTV cameras, one in the cockpit and one on the top of the mast. They are the units marked DVR and are 12 volt. The units on the left are distribution amplifiers so they go to the chart plotter and TVs

i had a look at your system - it looks almost right for me except i'd only wish it to save data i ask it to save. I wonder if i could replace the motion sensor with a big red button...

Hi James,
It doesn't support trigger record as the motion detection is software detection rather then PIR. Just leave it on and instead of pressing record, delete what you don't want. It can be set to chunk it into small files.
Yep Sephina goes in the water in a week after 20 months work. Very nervous. The mast gets stepped Tuesday so will be able to test out the masthead camera. The cockpit camera has been recording for several months now and works a treat. Just installing an engine camera! A bit OTT!

You're right, OTT but i guess it saves lifting the floorboards ;-)

Where are you going on your round the world adventure? That bit of your site wouldn't work for me. If you're anywhere near Tierra del Fuego Christmas 2013/14 we should keep in touch - that's where we're headed!
