Can you boat more cheaply on the south coast?

May have found somewhere 👍 keeping to myself for a mo as they only have a few spaces left for this year and I haven't bought the boat yet so can't sign up...

Will disclose when I know what's what....

We have been at Bucklers Hard for 5 years now, it's a beautiful location but it's not cheap, I'm not sure how much the boat yard and slipway charges are but you would be hard pressed to find a better location around the solent, but then I am biased :-)

If you live in Bristol then the River Dart is only 75 miles away or so. It is navigable upstream for 6 miles (on a rising tide) and there are loads of visitors moorings to choose from at about £12 a day if you have paid for a navigation permit for the year. We have a deep water trot mooring on an annual basis for a 35 foot yacht which costs about £1500 including a dinghy rack. Parking can be an issue until you get to know the place and choose your launch spot but we have been on the Dart for about 20 years now and never had a real difficulty. You can use the Dart as a base and Salcombe is only 12 miles or so away. Brixham is only just around the corner to the North East. The river trip up to Totnes is wonderful - seals, egrets, heron, kingfishers, peace and quiet, lovely!

I tried to PM you but not enough posts yet

Can you give me some more details on where your mooring is and how to apply - is it for 6 months or 12 ??

I spoke to them - no spaces but we're on a waiting list.

Trust me - they are cheap(ish).

We were going to get a car that would put in and out but that fell through - so need a river / trot / swinging mooring and a dinghy now or Marina / drystack.

I got a quote for Cobbs - over £6000 p.a. for a drystack berth for a 24' (well 26' with swim platform etc) - that just isn't affordable for "normal people" anymore I don't think.

I'm torn - Portishead Marina is super convienient for us (20 mins from home) BUT the tides are huge, the cruising grounds not that great and the water is murky - I dont' think I want to pay £3300 a year for that boating experience.

Cardiff is exactly the same - but half the price - but although only "50 mins" in theory - can be 2-3 hours if the traffic is a problem.

So we are back to square 1 - it's either horrible - or ludicrously expensive, or I have to get a big 4x4 to put in and out the water, or get a small tender and have a trot / swing mooring.

Quite tempted by that Dart mooring above for about £1k - if that's a year not 6 months I think I'm up for that!

We pay £6100 for a walk on mooring at Bucklers (thats the 2025 price) for our 28ft Leader 805, they don't have a dry stack but I'm pretty sure there are both river and pontoon places available, but it's expensive, we make sure we use it to justify the cost. The other option is Hythe Sailing Club on Southampton water, I previously had a swinging mooring there which was about £1000 a year.

Maybe Southampton would work out better for you e.g. Shamrock Quay for a 25ft boat is around £3600 and maybe cheaper if you contact them for a more "difficult" to access berth. All are walk ashore moorings.

There is dry stack at Christchurch About – Bailey Bridge Doesn't give a price though !

Ah yeh that isn't cheap - I was looking at the "store on a trailer" option which is a fraction of that

But

a) they have no space
b) I don't have the 4x4 now to launch it.

Certainly looking at Swinging Moorings I think I can save some money - just wonder how the other half will take to a small dinghy to get out to the boat!

I reckon I could live with that - its a decent price for the South Coast - but ideally I'd rather be paying something starting with a 1 !!

I've used Dorset Lake Shipyard before - the only issue with that location is that the moorings right by the entrance are quite easy to get to but the cheaper (and less likely to already be taken) are a way out. They have a launch - but we'd be getting there quite late on a Friday and I reckon the launch wouldn't be running by then.

So still not found "my place" yet lol!

Emailed them - looks a very new site - will be price dependant - might be an option....

Can anyone tell the OP more about moorings on the Dart -it would seem a great location but save for say Noss what else might be found? We visit kingswear but hardly cheap.
Most, but not all, trot and swinging moorings on the Dart are run by Dart Harbour and Navigation Authority - full details and application forms are on their website.
