Can petrol go off

Why am I not surprised
Why are you surprised that I say that I will dispose of my old fuel in an environmentally friendly way. And that I won’t film it. I’ve never posted a video anywhere on the internet, ever. I wouldn’t know where to start. And why on earth would anyone want to watch me pouring a little stale petrol into my lawn mower?

I suspect you thought I’d said I would dispose of it by chucking it away or on a fire. But you’d be wrong - again!

Why are you surprised

Because in his blinkered proletariat view, by nature of owning a bigger boat than him you must be the (evil) bourgeoisie. Which of course you may well be but it's beyond him to fathom that being bourgeoisie doesnt exclude being egalitarian or responsible. In short. Anger issues.

I’ve got 130 litres x 2 full to the brim. 4 x dosed with Marine 16 petrol and fuel set

a further 200 ish in the big tank dosed to the eye balls again.

interestingly….I went through 300 litres odd and after draining the pre filters once after the first trip (maybe 50 ml water each filter) I had no more water. I thought I’d have had loads more than that given it had been kept empty and lightly used for quite some time. I think the dosing did it’s job

Fingers crossed but I didn’t know about the octane going up as per @BruceK and running rich. Exactly what I have. Ive bought all new plugs as I thought it could be them but it’s probably the fuel. Won’t hurt to change them anyway. I’ll add more fresh next year ??

I bet I have used more petrol n my tohatsu 3.5 than you have.

The boat project I have just got has a very large aluminium tank. And the floods thing is nearly full. At a guess it’s a 200l tank.
The guy I got it from
Is a first class bu#####tter. He said it’s a year old. But so far he lied about everything so I do t believe him about anything.
But I would cry if I dumped £250 wort of petrol. Any thoughts.
could you use it in your car ? if it plays up the aa would rescue you , its not ideal but it would give you a idea if it is still o.k. orther than that sell it at 10 quid a gallon at the moment.....

Thanks for posting that .
Some other advice on the following (also a maker of fuel additives ) suggesting diesel should be considered to have a shelf life of around 90 days unless treated. I had been thinking of topping up my fuel on the boat but now uncertain. Nor does waiting to add fuel in March guarantee success as it could be fuel that has sat in the marinas tank for months!
I do think a change to HVO for marine fuel would be a good thing as I understand it is not prone to bug and has a long storage life.

Leisure boat operators - potential fuel quality issues

'''MARINE DIESEL FUELS :
Until recently, all sectors of the Marine industry had permission to purchase high sulphur content Diesel fuels (Marine Gas Oil) , whilst land based consumers were obliged to use ULSD (Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel) fuels.

Today , all consumers of Diesel fuel are obliged to use ULSD , in favour of reducing harmful sulphur emissions into the atmosphere.

Sulphur content in Diesel fuel did have some positives , in that sulphur provided “lubricity” characteristics to the fuel , helping fuel system components to combat excessive wear ; also further supporting the fuel’s additive system to remain in situ , when the fuel is held in storage for (sometimes) many years.

Burning Diesel fuel with minimal sulphur content (0.1%) does not have any negative effect on engine performance , but the operator does need to be aware of the downsides of this new fuel type , when it comes to it’s storage during off season periods - and how to ensure there is a useable fuel sitting in the storage tanks , when a new season commences.

DIESEL FUEL DEGRADATION – LONG TERM STORAGE ISSUES

As today’s ULSD fuels no longer possesses the same characteristics as their higher sulphur content predecessor, the new fuel type does not have the capacity to keep in suspension for any length of time , the vital additives package that is built into the fuel and which is key to it’s performance. A shelf life of approximately 90 days is considered a guide for ULSD fuels and it is within this timeline , that additional additising of the fuel with products such as CLEARWINNER PURIFY and 31A-WD MARINE should be considered , to extend the fuel’s shelf life for many more months , ensuring that a useable , serviceable Diesel fuel is in place , when required.
