I knew 'Dark Horse' very well when she was new in about, er, um, 1970. She was built for Lloyds Bank Sailing Club, and I had just started working in the computer dept of the Bank where one of the club skippers also worked. I was an experienced dinghy racer then but no 'big boat' stuff at all, but I got kidnapped anyway (with 2 weeks 'special leave', i.e. extra holiday!!) for a week's shakedown cruise cross-channel and Devon on 'the Horse' followed by racing in Cowes Week. I was in charge of the foredeck with a couple of other dinghy racers in the team, and I remember getting very frustrated with the afterguard who didn't seem to me to have any sort of clue about fleet tactics and windshifts. So we were well down the pan in the racing but we had a good time anyway.
Where is she now? She did a circumnav after the bank sold her, then more recently she was based on the Orwell, but I've not seen her since her then owner John Hatfield died.

What a super site you have. I own Tapornini - which lives at Levington on the Orwell - was also home to Oberon. Black Horse also used to live there. I recall looking at Scorpio when prior to purchasing Tapornini - great to see she has found a new home! Your list of other vessels is most interesting.

Black Horse. Lloyds Bank SC?

I sailed with Lloyds Bank SC. Their boat was named Dark Horse - a schooner ca 60 ft. Long since sold into private ownership (to a member of this forum IIRC). Whether there is a replacement I don't know.

The other Lloyd's (note difference in spelling ;) ) had a Nic 55 - Lutine of course. She was a good sailing boat but had a hard time in the 79 fastnet because of a cavernous cockpit and doors rather than washboards. Having said that, don't assume that Nicholsons are a family; you can't extrapolate the sailing behaviour of one model from others in the line. For example I was interested in a 44 at one time. It had a nice layout but I was warned off as its sailing performance was said to be poor.

I've got one too, wonderful boat, as said before not as much room as a modern 43, but I wouldn't swap her for a modern boat, close quarters is interesting but you get used to it, all in all great boat

I'm guessing that's Savoir Faire? She used to be on the next door mooring to us at Ardfern.

Great to see real owners! I am considering to buy my first boat in 2-3 years and this beauty really caught my eyes. We are a family of 3, hopefully 4 in the not-too-far future, do you think she could support 4 people on a longer passage (e.g. Transpac)? How does it sail when loaded with supplies? How does it handle rough weather?

Hi, if you want a boat to sail , then they are great, whatever the weather , we came from wales last September in 40 knots of wind over the stern in big seas, no problem at all and we live aboard so she's always loaded, wouldn't have a problem going anywhere in the world with her. As I said before there's not as much room aboard as a modern boat but if you can put up with that then you'll be fine.

Sounds great! 2 kids? Is the boat easy on service? I mean here bolted hull-deck joint and usual fool-proof practicalities old boats.
