I want to fit a 240v heater element in my calorifier , a blank plug is fitted. My question is can I fit a standard 11 inch element at a cost of £30 rather than a marine one costing £100 ?

Suspect the marine one is sized to the Calorifier which are usually much smaller than a Domestic water tank, hence are produced in smaller numbers so more expensive. I would buy the correct size one for the Calorifier otherwise you may produce a boiler !

Also check the wattage, I think mine is around 750 Watts. Normal household elements are 2 or 3 kW which could be too much for your shoreline or generator. Do you know the Calorifier make and model? Maybe see if there is any information on their website and then look to see if there is a cheaper equivalent.

Yes when I said size I meant the kW rating rather than length, too much power in a small tank is not necessarily a good thing!

My calorifier is fitted with a 1.5kW element. Can you get a domestic one with the same thread size with a suitably low rating? I would not want to take the risk of a 3kW element and don't think my existing consumer unit setup would cope with the extra current.

Got mine from Midland Chandlers. High temperature cut out stat as required for heating from the engine, usually around 85 degree and the electrical one at 60. If your calorifier is horizontal get the longest that will fit. 1 kw and over available but 1.5 max I would suggest. As has been said, all domestic version are 3kw. Too much.
