Mikuni Heater Recommissioning - Any Tips

I have a Mukini MY30 fitted to the boat. It’s been switched off for over 10 years. When I refitted the boat the ducting was removed and fuel tank that the standpipe was in was decommissioned. I have twin fuel tanks. The heater was not decommissioned per se, it was just switched off and never used again. It was working perfectly.

I am going to try and get it fired up and I am looking for some tips. For example, I have a portable fuel tank, should I use paraffin or just standard diesel from a garage. The objective is to see if I can get it running again, to make a decision on use or replace.

Looking for start up tips after prolonged shutdown for hot air diesel heaters.

My new china spacher took a few attempts at first start up as the pump pushed fuel to it. But all normal and good in the end.


DO NOT shut off the power until it has completed its cool down cycle .

I.e., switch off at the control unit AND WAIT until the fan stops and the display goes off.

If you cut the power it can burn out the glow plug.

Do not ask how I found out 🙄

It may smoke a bit at first start. Thats usual. But it clears after a bit.

Mine's a Chinspacher. I burn kerosene (Paraffin) in mine, but that's largely because the diesel that I get from my supplier is/was still high sulfur and gave problems, solved by using kero.
You may have to operate the fuel pump for a while to get fuel up to the heater pump. The Chinaspachers have a dedicated button to press for this.

It was cheaper to replace my Mykuni with a Vevor heater than replace the mykuni glow plug.

Vevor kicks out a lot more heat, but had to change the exhaust and ducting as it was all a few mm bigger 🤨
 
I felt it wasn't worth repairing my 2kw Mykuni unit. Replaced with a 5kw Vevor branded model.

All good and it kicks out loads more heat into the cabin.
 
I have the same heater that runs very well. I'd go for paraffin, make sure there's a good power supply and just go for it. I'd be more inclined to put money on it starting than not...
 
I have an mx60 which i hadn't used for 2 years. It started fine but I found the exhaust hose had perished and I ended up with a rather smoky engine room. I would double check this before starting as I think that moisture will have got in and maybe rotted it
