Looks as though those of us with gas lockers built for 4.5kg bottles will have little option other than fill our own from larger cylinders.

Calor statement
… or simply swap to Camping Gas cylinders. Yes more expensive weight for weight - but typically ours lasts at least 40 days on board, so perhaps £50 extra per annum. Hardly the most material boat cost

Did you read the thread? FloGas do a 4.5kg with almost identical dimensions. Many people have commented on this.

I thought today was going to be a productive day.

After visiting the boat (a Moody with a snug fitting locker for two 4.5kg Calor cylinders) I measured the diameter of the locker spaces at 260mm, found they had flat bottoms and actually had an available height of 450mm (so 110mm spare above the old style shorter Calor 4.5kg.

The Flogas website showed a few stockists nearby... an independent [name removed] near Bosham and two B&M stores in Portsmouth. Perfect.

I thought I'd try the independent place first but after not getting any answer at the open door (even though I stood within inches of a cage holding half a dozen 4.5kg Flogas cylinders) I ended up going to B&M.

There I stood next to cage full of Flogas but no 4.5kg in sight...

The sign and price list at B&M (as well as a lack of 4.5kg cylinders there) shows they only stock the larger sizes...

Does this imply that Flogas might also be discontinuing this 4.5kg size or I am over worrying? Is it really worthwhile getting the 21mm clip-on adapters .... you can see what I'm thinking.

Edit... Removed the supplier name.

If you swap to a different gas bottle supplier if you need to change the regulator it must be Marine approved for the additional corrosion properties and more importantly are also made so that if the bottle is not upright, ie heeled over it will prevent liquid gas flowing into the pipe

our local farm shop has 907 full gaz bottles in stock , called in this afternoon to exchange , they wouldn‘t take my rather rusty bottle in exchange , it has been in the bow locker and get wet with sea water from time to time . they said calor gas won’t accept rusty bottles . One of the reasons I have been given in the past for the excessive expense of replacement 907 bottles is that they are de rusted , pressure tested and repainted every time .
not sure where I go from here to obtain a replacement bottle …. Any thoughts or suggestion
Chris

thanks for the suggestions received , I’d wired brushed off the rust , revealed more blue , looked like a different bottle after cleaning , took it back for exchange, hay presto - you have found another bottle , that’s ok for exchange - job done

I wonder how many of the regulators being swapped out are “marine” ones. Mine certainly wasn’t and was fitted by a professional boat gas firm.

Thats bad by the firm. I've got a bulkhead marine regulator so just need to change the fitting on the hose when I actually get round to changing bottles. I have acquired a 7kg calor bottle (need to collect) so I can see whether it will fit in my gas locker. I can do all the measurements I like but still prefer the actual item for making the final decision.

I did all the measuring I liked.... and I know what you mean by it nice having the physical item to hand.

Already decided though that a 7kg cylinder at the quoted height of 495 mm was not going to fit into the under seat gas locker that only has 450mm height available.

:(

My problem is that the height is around 500mm so want to make sure there is room to play ....

have i understood correctly that Flogas need one sort of connector (different from Calor of course) but camping gas need a different one again?

Yes, Campingaz is a screw on from the top, FloGas is clip on. I think both are relatively standard while the Calor ones are quite unique even within the Calor range

I use a Calor Gas heater at home and found that B&Q were cheaper when I wanted to buy another one,
Now B&Q have totally stopped doing Calor Gas and have gone onto FloGas.

Give it a clean with emery paper and get a cheap blue aerosol paint spray and you have the something they will take.

So do people think dealers will take an empty 4.5 calor gas bottle (if its in good nick) if you buy a R907 in return - and give any credit/discount for it?

Experienced boater but novice when it comes to gas. Maybe some of the more knowledgeable people here can advise me.

Presently have 4.5kg Calor butane, thinking of changing to 6 or11kg Flogas propane.

Is it OK and safe to use propane with a gas hob/grill that presently runs on butane? I understand a new 37mbar reg would be needed.

Reason I would like to change to propane is that I am thinking about an LPG (which is propane I believe) generator as standby for my solar powered boat. I think this would be preferable to petrol.

Does this make sense?
