I know, it sounds like I'm starting a war. What I want to know is, are there any sailing boat marinas in Yorkshire? Which is the nearest to Sheffield? Thanks

There is a marina in Goole (if you must) and a large and inexpensive marina in Hull. (of course any of you may not consider East Yorkshire to be "proper " Yorkshire, but what do you know?)
Any more?

"Is something wrong with Goole?"

I suppose "how long have you got" would be the best response.

Although you do have the choice of 2 marinas which is remarkable for a town of its size.

Its main disadvantage is that the only place to go is down the Ouse and Humber and back again. Lock in and out an hour or maybe 2 either side of high water.

The Ouse is interesting, a few years ago one of the oil barges (about 600 tons) lost its engine on the river downstream of Goole. The pointy end stuck on a shallow bit, the barge swung broadside to the tide and was sunk in a few minutes by the tide simply washing over it. The crew were rescued by helicoter.

Hull is not too bad but still means you have to go where tide dictates.

Some alongside moorings at South Ferriby (Clapson's) but don't know any details other than lock into Humber an hour or so either side of HW.

Perhaps Whitby may be better - Harbourmaster has changed which must be an improvement. The last one was a miserable old ********

Scarboro has some pontoon moorings but I don't know any details - Nice place Scarboro.

Goole, not sure what county that is in now. Probable South Humbersideshire. There is something else on the S side of the Humber too. South Ferriby - probably your nearest. And Grimsby, but it's not called Grimsby for nothing!

Hull, Humberside. Proper marina but with lock gates.

Scarborough and Bridlington. Both dry out and have cradles for the local berth holders. Seems to be a mini marina near the entrance at Scarborough, not sure what depth, never got round to investigating.

Boston, Lincs., not realy a marina, but you can tie up and get out to the sea.

Whitby, Hartlepool etc. in the NE.

Don't forget Salford Quays in the other direction. Bit of a pain negotiating all the bridges on the Manchester Ship Canal.

Conwy and adjacent havens not too far in N.Wales, if you can excuse the Welsh attitude to English people who bring them jobs.

Once you've driven an hour and a half + to any of these of course, you could be nearly 1/2 way to Bursledon Bridge or Hamble-le-Rice.

Or 1/3 of the way to Plymouth like me.

In a couple of hundred years there should be good marinas at Doncaster and Leeds. Get your name down!

It's a very big county, isn't it? Autoroute gives 102 miles by road from Whitby to Sheffield. I have to work one or two days a week for the autumn in said South Yorks town, and I thought rather than go through all that hotel/b&b stuff I'd move my boat up there for the period (yes it has a heater!). I like my boat. But I think the distances have put me off.

[/ QUOTE ] I'm born and bred in East Yorkshire, so I'm entitled to say that. We called the Goolensians (their name) - Goolies. A far more descriptive term.
(However if you're in the market for buying printing services speak to Broadley and Sons, Printers in Goole. Great prices and service. Talk to Gary)

I lived in Sheffield until 6 months ago. During my years there I sailed from Scarborough (nice harbour but few pontoons, most moorings dry, sound of adjacent funfair precludes sitting around on your boat on weekends where the weather is poor. Most Scarborough boaters I met, tired of Whitby, sailed to the Dutch waterway system for their summer cruise) and Porthmadog (again drying moorings but lots of places to go on a lovely part of the coast). Scarboro about two hours from Sheffield; Porthmadog three and a bit with your foot down.

Three and a bit hours on the road will also get you to the A12/A14 roundabout outside Ipswich, just ten minutes from the Orwell. That's where I decided to keep my boat and in the end I moved down south to be nearer to the water. I'm now 50 minutes from my boat at Woolverstone and don't miss Sheffield very much. All-tide access and so many places to sail that I'll never do them all.

There are also moorings north of Liverpool about two hours from Sheffield, just off the end of the M57.

Regards, Mudhook

Grimsby very friendly marina but has been part of NE Lincs, Humberside and S Yorks so a bit of an identity crisis. Owned by a berth-holders cooperative Grimsby is worth a visit in my book. I would say that - I met my wife at Grimsby Town railway station so have romantic connections, there's an admission.

Had a fabulous trip on a Humber sailing billy out of Goole on a misty early autumn morning under the Humber bridge and back. I shouldn't have worried about the lack of fenders as steel is incredibly tough. Wondered how often they needed to repaint their topsides all the same.

Visible through the mist was the jetty where Kim Philby was spirited away in '62 by a Russian freighter. Magic!

Water's are a bit brown and the air's a little dusty

Goole ..... Mmmmmm remember it well !!

Had to visit a ship discharging there ... was a Sunday. Place was DEAD ..... couldn't find a decent place for lunch ..... pubs were closing all around,

Sorry to those that may live round there - but after that - I cannot imagine having a boat there ..... My Russian wife was with me and she still remembers today searching for 'life' !!!

No problem, no problem.......

How far is it from Shefield to Doncaster?

Well there is your answer, there is a marina in Doncaster. I know this is true, I have seen it myself.

You need not worry about tide times, bad weather or rowdy visitors (oh! actually you might!). You would also have little need for charts or a passage planing

Re: Goole ..... Mmmmmm remember it well !!

I was born in Goole and grew up just outside Doncaster. I remember Goole as a thriving international port. I remember the amazing elevator thing for lifting and tipping railway coal wagons and long lines of "Tom Puddings" or coal barges on the canals. Also saw a spectacular fire at a sugar warehouse in Goole once.

But these days the coal is gone and you can't get a container ship up there so the place is dying. (The docks still seem to handle some timber and imported cars though.)

Can't stand the place these days. Whenever I go back it seems to be for a funeral. Can't imagine keeping a boat there.

Yes it is a big place.

First thought is that if you are prepared to remove the mast you can go all the way to Sheffield and park your boat there.

Certainly Goole is within easy reach of Sheffield - straight down the M18 less than an hour at a guess. Also can do by train via Doncaster . Cars are not welcome in Sheffield.

Goole is a bit of dump, the marinas have limited facilities but equally they are quite cheap. There are some decent pubs in the area which offer good eating.

If you decide to go for it drop me a PM and I will advise further.

Another alternative could be Naburn marina near York. Bit further to drive to Sheffield (about 30 mins more than Goole) but much nicer place. You will have to arrange a couple of bridge openings for the mast.

Re: Goole ..... Mmmmmm remember it well !!

Kept my boat there for a few months some years ago.

Does seem a sort of sad place to me, the coal hoist is still there and the docks are busy and apparently profitable.

Actually you can get container ships up there and there is a thriving service of containers now.

Think the trouble is that all the money gets taken out of the town, most investment is now close to M18 and M62 rather than Goole itself so town centre appears run down. There is still the railway crossing in the middle of the high street and the opening bridges on the road south of the town so that the place shuts down for an hour or so if a ship leaves and for rather longer if a ship leaves at the same time as a train arrives.

Goole ....

<<Goole is a bit of dump, the marinas have limited facilities but equally they are quite cheap. There are some decent pubs in the area which offer good eating. >>

Decent pubs ???? offer good eating ??? Where ?? Wife and I drove round for ages ....... ended up going to motorway cafe on way back home !!!!

Sad place indeed ....

Re: Goole ....

Not in Goole intself

No indeed - most of the pubs in the town I would want an air strike before I went near them.

If you move away from the town such places as Howden, Gilberdyke and the country roads to the north and east and the villages along them have some really nice places.

But for a stranger on a Sunday Goole must be ----- errr --- challenging.

Re: Goole ....

I was visiting the docks to sort out differences between cargo figures at load ports in Baltic - we cover loading ... and the discharged figures at Goole ...

Took wife - wasearly days for her visiting Uk and I thought ... long drive up from South Coast ... she can see the sites !! WEll it was about the time of the floods 4 - 5 yr ago and boy I have never seen so much water around !!

Well we got up there and went on ship ... sorted out the problem and then decided to find a nice place to have lunch - before driving back ... We asked the Local Surveyor for recc'd place and he was sort of 'dazed look' ... as much to say - Are you SURE you want to try !! Well he mentioned a couple of places ... can't remember names now, but anyway - we drove off and searched ............. searched is the word. One pub went in and asked - Food ?? Answer ... Yes. Great so ordered pint and swmbo wine .... asked for a menu ... to be told - You'll have to drink up quick - we're closing ....

After a drive round that was to say the least depressing - we decided to call it quits.......... Sorry to all those who know the place better and probably know a restaurant or two ... they were certainly not in evidence when we were there !
