Have I gone mad or is my North Sea Passage Pilot wrong? I thought the tide in Calais was 50 mins after Dover (ie +0.5 not "- 0.5")

Am I missing something?

I remain intrigued-for the OP (or anyone else who has a copy to hand): are there any explanatory notes about that clarify? Also for other ports with respect to Dover, do they follow the same notational logic or no?

I've a chit in with Imray to unlock my explore access but I'm curious.

Why pfaff around with Almanacs? Use the tide app on your phone, much quicker :)
It was much quicker to open a page on a book beside me than wander downstairs to look at my phone.

Onboard the phone is usually off as it serves no useful purpose.

It depends on which way you are travelling. If you leave Dover at HW then the next HW you see at Calais will always be later and vice-versa.

No, of course not. But navigating across time zones is a recipe for confusion unless you always adopt UTC, so anytime I see a 1hr error I immediately suspect it.
I am one of the few people I know that always uses UTC onboard no matter what time zone I am in.

Me too, bulkhead watches on the boat are all UTC (my PC too, helpful with radio and weather stuff). Wristwatches local time.
I even have a UTC watch at home, it makes guests suddenly look at their watches (cellphones these days) and worry for a fraction of a second if they are too early :D
