Buying new or secondhand yachts

I bought 2nd hand cus they don't make the type of boat any more.. well they do but at a rediculous price (Frances).. I have more boat for my money than if I bought new anyway.. I would have to spend 2 to 3 times for a new boat of about 25 ft which for a first boat (in my mind) is 2 or 3 times too much.. If I want to go up a size or 2 later fine I have bought a class that is well known and popular so will not have problem selling on (assuming I don't wreck Seun first!)

I personally prefer boat that have proven themselves over time.. you buy new and you don't really have the same class history as if you bought a boat that is a decade or so old.

Living 200m from a boat doesn't afford one the "luxury" of doing much DIY and a new boat becomes a very attractive proposition.

Bought an Oceanis 331, very comfortable (in and out of the marina), sails like a dream and I love it.

Different strokes for different folks.

I think the point was that you ended up with a better boat doing the Becky thing.
I wouldn't want to cross an ocean in a Bavaria.
But having said that, I doubt if most Bavaria owners want to cross oceans!

Horses for courses I suppose.

Re: Apples and Oranges

Can't comment on distending coachroofs it sounds far too uncomfortable!

What I can say though, is that I went on a corporate thinghy the other week on a Bavaria 35 and my PERSONAL OPINION was that it was pretty horrid. Everything seemed mean, small and skimpy. But worst of all was the frightening creaking noises from down below. I presume it was because everything was flexing and twisting. However, I don't know because I am not an expert in anything and it is just a PERSONAL OPINION.

Phew, I don't want to be taken to task by thought police or corporates so I must emphasise again the PERSONAL OPINION bit!!

.....oh, and please don't report me to Kim!

Re: Apples and Oranges

Now, you see, that's fine 'cos you were there and you heard it creaking, fair enuff. It's probably because the bulkheads are dropped into slots and afixed therein with gluey stuff, which doesn't really stop it creaking. Our boats did this too.

But none of this implies some kind of defective product. Most production boats have undersized gear, allowing 'one' to delve into the optional extras list to get it up to the spec it should have had in the first place, but that's business. At the prices Bavaria charge I'm almost surprised they include the mast as standard.

What riled me earlier is the manufacturer, not model, knocking. We had three masts break on one of our models (I broke one, my boss broke another, Hurricane wotsaname in '88 broke the other), and the whole world knew that they ALL fell down, all over a hundred of them. Got a bit wearing after a while.

Re: Apples and Oranges

Can't I be riled and helpful simultaneously? Even if I don't know the difference between slibel and lander?

Re: Apples and Oranges

I completely accept that you wanted to be helpful and that I am v grumpy. however, to quote Gallileo (who was not describing north Tyrolean roofs} 'but they move'

Re: Hmmmm.

I have sailed most of the Bav range and I've found no flexing in deck or coachroof mouldings.

The only reason I warn crew about Bav coach roof's is the non slip areas stop before the roll of the moulding and that makes a pretty lethal ski slope.

If you need to criticise Bav's it's pretty easy to do. What you can't do is fault their business plan. They have more happy customers than most.

Re: Hmmmm.

Tied up alongside a Bavaria 34 in Salcombe last year. The skipper told me that he was very un-happy about the boat. His forward bulkhead ''had exploded''.............. his words. Boat was under sail when it happened, in F3 - 4 on a beat, not really putting any strain on things. Bavaria would'nt accept responsibility, until he got a marine lawyer involved.

He definitely was not a proud owner!!, and lost a whole summer season to boot!
