Following on from the post about anchor lights. Any recommendations for UK supplies of these items. Looking for something I can hang from the rigging and plug into a 12V socket. Can you get them with a Fresnel (don’t have a go if the spelling is incorrect) lens?

I recently got a Davies "Mega-light", available for around £30 mail order. It fits your spec. has a photo-cell switch and is quite well made. The wattage is very low (100 or 300mW ), good for the battery, but perhaps not for brightness, the Fresnel lens also creates a rather narrow band of light. It seems to do the job, but I'm dubious about it's claimed 2 mile range.

Our anchor light is a home build special consisting of a few leds glued into the end of a sikaflex tube run on a long lead and plugged into the 12v. It hangs in the rigging at night and draws bugger all amps and can be seen quite clearly from plenty far away. Most recommended!

Nasa marine do an LED anchor light. It has 32 Leds in a ring. it's made of tough polycarbonate, completely waterproof and draws only 200mA. It's very bright and can easily be seen at 2Nm.

it doesn't say it (on the link provided) is actually an LED but judging by the consumption I guess it must be?

I have an old tri-colour masthead light and i replaced the lens with a piece of clear plastic tubing from wickes. It works very well and can be seen well over 3 miles away. (if i put it on when im in my usual fishing spot, future SWMBO can see it from her house right up the hill)

However i never use it unless im in a busy area, prefering to use my antique hurricane lantern, and i would recomment the latter, as it uses NO power, is easily visible, and will go 12 hours on a single filling.

This is the "Mega Light" I referred to in my earlier post. Going by the price and the low consumption, I too thought it must be a LED, but it isn't. Two conventional filament bulbs are provided, 100mA and 300mA, "normal" and "bright". ( I put mW in original post, my mistake! ).

I bought an ex Tesco's camping light, flourescent and with a 12 lead acid rechargeable battery. It charges from the yacht's 12v supply and cost me a fiver. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
