Buy the biggest boat you can or buy small and sail longer?

If you are going around the world it doesn't really matter where you start.

The US is a great place to find cheap boats even allowing for the shocking exchange rate! The Americans don't buy old when it comes to boats.

One downside there though is having imperial fasteners/nuts/bolts with 110v 60hz charger etc

I asked a lot of questions on here :)n and summarised it as I went.
.....

In April I bought a westerly longbow ketch very cheaply and that winter sailed her south round lands end to essex, but thats another story.

Hi Steve,

That's an amazing story, although I'm not sure if I'm encouraged by your account! Seemed like everything that could have gone wrong, did! My plan is to at least get some RYA quals at least.

Hope your girlfriend is OK!

Cheers,
Ross

:) :)

She is Ross thanks, tumours are held stable by chemo, and she's now my wife :)

(Congrats btw!)

Ross, the RYA quals are non essential but I'd encourage getting the experience. Find someone who needs an extra hand and join them on their boat. There are opportunities for private tuition out there too. I'd encourage a fair few days out learning the ropes as it were. (Though before that I'd recommend esail for some basic familiarization and the Reeds Skippers Handbook for theoretical advice).

Thanks! I think my questions will get a lot narrower/focused once I get actually get sailing and get some foundational knowledge laid down. I'm hoping with some experience, buying a good first boat and being able to get insurance will put me in the right direction.

It may be liable for VAT upon return to the UK. However it maybe exempt or already have proof of VAT payment/exemption. Others may have more knowledge on this but it may also depend on when it left the EU/UK

How about a NIC 30?

Looks like it's had some osmosis in the past, no? And that mast is probably the original - do masts 'wear' out?

I don't know why you think it's had osmosis, it just looks like badly-prepared flaking antifoul to me.

If you're attracted by a very cramped 45 year old boat, this Nicholson 30 is rather cheaper, looks rather more inviting inside, has had the mast and boom replaced, and has a reconditioned engine.

If you Google you'll find other Nicholson 30 boats for around £7-8K.

If you want small and want to go places look at Vertues ... newer ones come in grp for less maintenance ... all in budget. Read up on their history. Slightly bigger budget look at the Wanderer class - then read Hiscock !!

No masts don't wear out but they can be damaged in various ways and you have to look out for corrosion.

On the face of it a nice boat. I see your quantum LOA is creeping up :-)

It's gone from £16,000 to 13,500 and now to 11k. Somewhat tempted :)

26 feet? Pah!

I can't match you for LOA, but how about round the world in 18'?

40 days to cross the Atlantic might drag a bit. I take it the skipper was a frugal eater and not easily bored. Its also worth remembering that more small boats have set of round Cape Horn that have arrived even with experienced crews, and even Folkboats have vanished without trace. In a big sea, the bigger the boat, the greater the comfort and safety. One cant avoid all risk and the sea can destroy anything as can stray cargo ships but its best to improve the odds if you can.
