Butane or Progane.

Waiting for the weather to clear while crop dusting forestry in Scotland, we hid in the caravan up on the strip. Played cards in the sub zero temps. The heater ran off Butane, so when it wilted, one of our Finnish pilots drained a bit of Avgas from one of the planes, poured it on the ground and set light to it, then put the cylinder on the flaming patch. Heater cheered up and we played some more hands. I asked Pekka Pannanaan (wonderful name) if that wasn't a bit risky? He, Only if you have a leak in the connections or tube....

Is a Butane bottle like a campingaz 907 suitable or safe for use with Propane ?

The vapour pressure is minute compared with the strength of the bottle. I have had 13 kg Calor butane bottles on which the red paint indicating propane was clearly visible beneath the blue. The bottles are interchangeable apart from the fittings.

My cooker ENO has a label that say 30Mbar Butane G30
Progane G31
Am I right in saying the cook can be used of eve gas ?
Thanks
I swapped from butane (907) to Calor propane 17years ago with a 1999 ENO 2 hob and oven. Only changed the regulator and works fine. I did check with a specialist gas fitter and he confirmed no issues.

OK guys let me explain my comment on 50/50
a full bottle of Propane has 7 kg
I have two empty bottles that will safely hold 2.5kg
I have a third bottle that partly full ,
so rather then wait till its empty to top up using the left other 2 kg ,
I tho of just topping that one up .
You may ask , why not wait till its empty ,
Well I want to be able to get my €65 deposit back on the bottle before we more on .

If the temperature is above about 10C all the gas will be burnt.

Many EU states use blended But + Prop ..... based on Northern EU states can drop to negative temps. Butane will have problems as you approach zero ... it does not have to go -ve .....

100% Propane is available - but not as implied by posts etc. As most Propane supplied does have Butane from small to moderate amounts depending on location / source.

I'm a bit out of my depth now .
I been decanting butane no problem .
To day I brought a 20kg bottle of propane .
Connecting the bottle as I did with butane as the valve open you can hear a hiss of gas from the donate bottle then it stop .
I tried turn off the valves and releasing some gas from the pipe but still no joy .
What's going on ?
Donate bottle under spray hood upside down , small bottle about 30 cm below right way up .

It’s all about temperature difference Vic, the receiving bottle should be cooler than the supply bottle. The bigger the temperature difference the faster the bottle will fill. If you cannot get the receiving bottle cool than just leave the valves open, it may take 30 minutes or much longer to transfer a good amount of liquid gas.
When at home I can cool the receiving bottle in a freezer for an hour or so, the supply bottle is at ambient temperature ,15 to 20 deg C, the supply bottle was around 6 deg C, transfer takes around 1 minute with an audible whoosh of the liquid transfer,
with both bottles at ambient it took 1 hour for me.

Ok thanks , I started to wonder if it had anything to do with air and it needed venting .

I always purge the hose by leaving the hose connection on the receiving bottle slightly loose and opening up the donor bottle. Only takes a few seconds and then fully tighten the connection. I do this in the open.
It can take nearly an hour to transfer the gas. I like Bran's idea in post 35 about the freezer but I don't have on big anough.

Yep you had it . Left it in the sun for the morning and it started to fill , took quite a while.
Funny as when I filled the butane last month they filled very quick .
Thank any way
