These things are fiendishly expensive, £90 from Bukh if my memory serves, and much as I like the lads there if there was a cheaper alternative I'd feel happier about keeping a spare on board.
Anyone know if there is a less costly alternative?
TIA

I looked into this about 8 yrs ago when we bought our boat. As our Bukh was sea water cooled, it ran at a lower temp than indirectly cooled engines, and therefore the thermostat opened at a lower temp than the vast majority of thermostats available. As a result, I wasn't able to get a cheap one. Fortunately it lasted as long as we kept the engine for. I thought it was sticking on one occasion, but when removed from the engine, and heated in a pan of water on the cooker it opened at around 70 deg C.

Why do you need a spare? They rarely fail, and if one sticks open you probably won't notice and if it sticks shut you can just remove it until you are able to get another.
