Not a particular tool-nerd but the current episode of Ran Sailing features a magic router employed by Johan to cut out the first of temporary frames for their build. How ingenious ! And of course the whole project is of great interest.

I'm curious as to how he's going to turn the hull inside the barn. When it's been strip planked it must weigh quite a bit and fill the barn space.

I'm sure he's thought of most things - he seems pretty competent.

I think the shed coachroof is a bit of an abomination.

Great router: maps the work surface, virtually places the template on the work surface, guides teh user to manually guide the router around the virtual template, adjusts the router blade position to compensate for human accuracy and even withdraws the router bit if the human moves off the cut line. What great idea for a manual router.

I can imagine it being invaluable for a big project like theirs but, while I really want one, I can't see getting one anytime soon.

The boat certainly isn't the prettiest I've ever seen, but she fits their need. Especially as a livaboard, I'd far rather have something that works as a home than some achingly beautiful creation with no space.

Also small projects, see the video's in the ShaperTools link, post 4. If a router was a tool used often and wood projects was a frequent activity, even for small, precision jobs, the savings this may give in jig time alone, could make it worth while. I do not think it is only for large jobs, quite the opposite in fact and at $3500 USA, it could easily pay for its self, if small one offs, on site, was a typical work load.

Design ideas here, these guys have been there, done that cruising. Shows from the design criteria. What a fantastic cruising boat to live on. No mention of "and mothers must think it looks pretty"
That deckhouse will be amazing. imagine your living room with 360deg views of snowcapped mountains or palm tree islands.
Very capable couple. (17.30 ?)

I’ve no doubt it will be practical, and Johann seems very capable, but I’m sure that Rolf could have designed it to look at least a little prettier.

He likes it, opinions only exist inside peoples heads. Nothing to do with the real world.

Edit - wow! What a boat, these guys must have spent hundred of hours thinking & chatting about what their ideal boat would be. Far flung anchorage all the world gurdlers would want a tour of that.
Seems way over most peoples heads here, "I don't think it's pretty" ??
Spade rudder & exposed prop bit scary though....

Johan does say in one of the design videos that the rudder design isn’t finalised but that it will be semi-skeg or skeg hung.

Also says if spade it can be over engineered, Same as Hawk, Evans Starwhosname , people have used that as an example of how spade rudders are no problem for ocean cruising.... can be plenty strong enough if designed well.
But I've looked out the back of the (long keel transom hing rudder) boat mid ocean to see I've just sailed straight over a basketball pitch size mess of ropes & fishing nets, oceans are sadly full of floating rubbish. Exposed prop as well would be too scary for me, but feel no need for 200 mile days though?
Tis all a compromise. ?

Looks aside, I just wonder how the deckhouse will be incorporated to make it 'bullet-proof' as per the Dashew FPB designs. Easier to do in aluminium than wood I would have thought. However I will concede to GHA that Johan is no fool and neither is his naval architect. It will be interesting to follow. They both seem able to move along at quite a pace (unlike me nowadays!) - a good team I think.

Same guy designed Dashews Deerfoot so must know a thing or 2 about offshore ?
But agree, those vertical windows will need to be very strong.
Deerfoot 61 - Practical Sailor
But this certainly isn't a back yard knock up a boat, must be as top of the pile design for a cruising boat design as Dashews.
