Building a comprehensive directory of East coast moorings

Shouldn't leave out some of the moorings on the Yare: not right for everyone.... but we've got one that allows river sailing at any tide from a bankside mooring (good for an afternoon or evening).... but easy access out to sea if that appeals.

I'm assuming you could find equally agreeable arrangements going inland from Lowestoft.

Problem that keeps getting highlighted to us is the choice of easy-range destinations from either Lowestoft or Yarmouth - those we've talked to about such things have pointed out that there's a damn good reason why most folk prefer somewhere on the Orwell, Stour or Deben.

I went out on my shake down cruise this weekend.I left Peterborough Yacht Club at 4PM and locked through at the dog and Doublet at 5pm,i gunned the engine and made Sutton bridge in just over 2hours,i did not need to ask them to raise the bridge and i moored up at the visitor pontoon to raise my mast and rig the boat.I went out on the morning tide and sailed around for 12 hours trying out the new rig and AP.I left the wash at around 3PM and stoped at the Sutton bridge pontoon, derigged the boat and motored back up slowly stopping at Guyhurn for a nights rest before heading on to the Dog and doublet and i locked through at 7am and was back at my mooring for 8 am.

I probably spent 45 quid on fuel for the whole weekend including travel costs,in future i intend to go and sail to places like Blakeney,Brancaster and wells.

last season i kept my boat at wells,it cost me around 25 quid each time just to get there and it took mayby 1.45 hours, then i had to dump my gear at the dock, retrieve my dinghy from its parking spot, load up dinghy,go park car in town center and walk back to dinghy, dinghy out the mile or so to the boat, load up and go sailing at HW -2. The average cost of a sailing trip was 50 quid.

I also sailed out of Ramsholt for a few months,Mr Cramp very kindly allowed me to use his mooring,a very good mooring too and the sailing was far better than wells,it was costing me about 50 quid each time i went down to the boat, then the fuel used on top whilst out over the bar.

The Wash is fine once you are out there, although i think that daves problems with his limited acess would drive me elsewhere.I have acess out of the Nene at about 90% of the tide,i only have to allow for getting through the Dog and doublet and my boat is now on a walk on walk off mooring with fresh water, shore power, showers and toilets on site and a clubhouse that sells beer at 1.70 a pint,my boat is 2 mins from my office and 20 mins from my home.It costs me 47 a year for membership and 95 for the mooring. The club is full of friendly folks and experienced sailors as well as riverboaters.I can get a crew at short notice if i want.

with your reputation?

Hi Dave, - hope all's well.

include depths

A quick plea from a 2m draft boat - when compiling details of moorings please remember not only to include access - but whether the mooring dries or stays afloat.

I'd love to visit Blakeney for example - I understand that access is limited but is there anywhere to say afloat once you're in? The charts are strangely contradictory - one suggests there are pools of 2m water - my plotter just shows it as grey (which I think means no info).

So, cut a long story short...include depths!
