Buckingham 20 restoration, formerly Plant Pot

Re: The plant pot

I did the strakes with four coats of Le Tonkinois and looks good to me. I was expecting to need to do more coats but it will be reat

You need at least 4 more coats, or by next spring it'll be a mess and need scraping back off and starting again.

At least 8 coats will get you through to spring, then you can quick light sand and whack 4 more on. Try to pick settled weather, mask up with the 3M 3434 tape, then whack on one neat coat a day for 4 days, then demask.

It'll save you time and money in the long run.

Hi fella. Glad to see that you're still moving along. Pity about the arm but at least you should have it sorted for the summer. Just make sure not to overdo it and undo the repairs. Give it time. Looking forward to seeing the big splash and if I were nearer, like in the same country, I'd gladly give you a hand. We'll done so far.

So do again much the same as i did for the first four coats, BUT dont leave the masking on to long, what a pig that was to get off, i just dont learn. I was going o go with 5-6 coats as suggest on the Le Tonk web site but asweathe rturned naff fro a few days after i did this an dit looks ok and sealed well i thoght sod it.

No worry though i will add more coats ;)

Hi SG

You me both been busy hey. Just got in from doing the final prep to the hull and for a change the weather forcast wa sspot on and started to rain at 18:30, was forecast 19:00, I did want to get a coat of primer on tonight but weather sounds good for this weekend. Mite get it painted :)

I will be sat chilling on the boat resting the arm in 7 weeks :)

You want the blue 3M 3434. Your masking tape woes will be over. Its just the best thing since sliced bread.

Is it low adhesion tape ? If so does it still stop paint creeping under ?

Anyway, on this canvas canopy. I am sure folk will not remember so long ago but the first design for the canopy was to make the hardtop canopy i have made a full length one with canvas sides only, but for some reason or another i changed it to what it is now. I am tempted to go back to a full one and extend this one. Not a big job so on deciding what to do.

T said to me why not do a detachable one bu then its where to put it or make it fold over the top of the front section.. Doing this though it will cover the solar panel on the sunny day we get over in the UK.

Oh why cant just stop faffing.

Aksherly I think the green frog tape is better for stopping creep underneath. But the blue 3M 3434 is brilliant, leave it on while you do half a dozen coats no bother, I tried cheaper brands of blue 'outdoor' and 'waterproof' masking tape and none are as good.

Yes, stop faffinf and get that mofo in the water.

I will give it a try, I will do the extra coats when on the water in a few weeks though, to much to get done now like paint it this weekend and a few BSS jobs for next weekend. Dont have long now.

I'd extend the the existing HT, as you say, it is easier for you do as you are more familiar with solid structure and I reckon more useful as a feature on the boat.
No leaks, better insulation, something solid to push on when manhandling the boat around pontoons and most importantly, by mounting handrails along the top, you have better ability to hold onto something while clambering around the narrow side decks on a small boat, canvas tops offer nothing to hold.
Good luck with the rest of the reno, I'm also keen to see her in the water.

As always when i want something its never easy to get. Even 3M tape, i went to Tool Station and they dont sell it so settled for Frog Decorators tape, still cracking stuff that. Came of with ease even after a few days in high temps.

So weekend gone i got it painted with out and dramas but for near killing me lol. I used Jotun paints which i do like. good price and easy to apply and no need to prep for more coats.

The rest underneath will be done bit by bit over the next few weeks as and when i can feel up to it. Got four weeks to get it all done

Have gas leaks now for some odd reason which started with the water heater line then the cooker and now all three lines are leaking, using bubble tester. I am very low indeed on gas so i have been told that could be the problem so to get a refill first to see what happens. Low pressures can cause bubbles in a bubble tester.

Doesn't a coat of paint make such a huge difference! She's looking great and you should be very happy with your efforts. Hoping all goes well on the big day but don't be surprised or disappointed if you encounter any teething issues on the day. It's all part of the process. Well done!

Wayne that looks great. Respect to you. With your new window lines and hardtop she has turned into a really good looking boat.
One small thing: at the bow you have painted only down to the chine. If you plan on using bottom paint in black or whatever, please consider doing the triangle below the chine in the white jotun. I mean, don't bring the black paint up to the chine at the bow because it doesn't look good. All imho obviously!

Going back to several posts up, I really like what you did with the maharam tek-wall fabric on the interior. Looks great. For those who asked, this is a technical wall fabric made by maharam in New York. It has been standard fit in that beige colour in fairline targas and squadrons in recent years. I have it ( in silver colour) on my boat.

what a transformation, looks very smart in white.
the interior wood work is fabulous - you must have the patience of a saint.
best of luck with the arm operation and of course the launch when you are fit and ready.

Its amazing how the project has turned out, well done.

I suspect I speak for most people when I say that there is a certain scepticism when someone posts a "here is my latest project" as so many founder very quickly.

Scepticism is a bit polite - I thought he was a nutter.

He has since done some very nice work on my boat!

I smile every day now when i get home :) the 10hrs of painting it 9 Plus more to come ) was well worth it ;)

Them teething problems have already started with this gas leak, can i find it, tightened all joints up, found a small leak, very small in one line but that has gone now. still all three lines leaking. All fine last time tested them over a year ago.

Ill sort it ;)

amazing work, the time, effort and skill that goes into something like this isn't appreciated enough!

I found that out with working on other folk boats, some think jobs are so quick and easy. Glad some folk appreciate it ;)

And thanks :)

Hi matey. I agree it wouldnt look good with a antifoul lower bow. Not my intention anyway. I was going to Antifoul but decided no point, never have on any boat as in the canal and rivers. The paint i have used on top is good for below water line so i am going white all over. I used Jotun Pioneer Top coat. I do like the stuff.

I have only done to the chine as the bottom still needs plenty of work, well a day or two but as struggling i am trying to do it bit by bit over the next week or so. I just wanted to get the top and sides done while i had chance with good weather, it easier to prep them for me. Bit different on my back needing full pressure from both arms sanding.

Bless her T said she will help me with sanding the hull, and would you believe she just found out last week she has a bad elbow like myself. I am not going to to let her though, she has done enough putting up with me.

I am thinking on dying the other material you sent a off white colour, mite have a go on a test er to see first how it goes with a few colours. Not dark though.

Yes that was a great week Mark, had a smashing time aswell as the working on your boat. And i still chuckle that i had breakfast with Jim Davidson, my claim to fame. Would of been better if i knew it was him for certain, but i couldnt ask and get a selfie can with him can i lol. Hope all is well down there ;)
